Duties / Accountabilities

  • Manage all aspects of Trades & Apprentice processes (including program development, onboarding, record keeping, recruitment, testing, etc.
  • while looking for continuous improvements where possible).

  • Partner with Human Resources to support strategic operational issues, investigations, disciplinary activity, as required.
  • Develop processes, SOP’s, schedules associated with development of on-site Trades Training Facility.
  • Manages relationships with Industry Training Authority (ITA), Aboriginal Training Societies, local training institutions -
  • ie. BCIT, Camosun and other trade schools and associations.

  • Develop and maintain a strategic action plan to engage with schools / local First Nation training facilities to encourage and promote trades as a future career.
  • Strategically manage community outreach and recruitment events; such as job fairs, tours for high school and trades institutions.
  • Participation in performance evaluations for both Apprentices and qualified Tradespeople.
  • Manages relationships pertaining to Apprentice management and trades supply with all union partners and implements avenues for improvement.
  • Manage process associated with training and check-in sessions with Apprentices and non-Red Seal qualified Tradespeople.
  • Assist, support and conduct trades focused recruitment in conjunction with our union partners while supporting and encouraging equitable hiring practices in line with Seaspan policies and diversity expectations / commitments.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Experience and Education

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Human Resources; either as a Human Resources Coordinator or Trades Coordinator, preferably in a unionized, heavy industry environment.
  • Completion of a related degree and / or diploma; or a trades qualification and practical experience is required.
  • A CPHR designation, or working towards a CPHR designation, considered as asset.
  • Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Experience in managing apprenticeship programs in British Columbia.
  • Familiarity with heavy industrial work processes and safety practices is an asset.
  • Intermediate / Advanced computer skills with MS Office.Suite
  • Experience working within a data driven environment and ability to develop and understand associated reports.
  • Ability to take the initiative and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Good persuasive and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail with good analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and problem solve.
