Position Overview The Senior Director, HR will be responsible for delivering full scope HR support and strategy for the Civil East segment at Aecon.

Managing a team of HR professionals who support a diverse portfolio of construction businesses within a matrixed environment, the Senior Director ensures that the HR team is enabling the strategic mandate of the Civil East executive team and supporting the workforce through all aspects of the employee lifecycle.

As a member of the HR Executive team the Senior Director is also responsible for ensuring effective integration with centers of excellence and effectively managing both operational and functional priorities within the organization. Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the segment executive team to identify organizational and talent issues that impact the achievement of business objectives and provide meaningful, action-
  • oriented solutions to resolve issues

  • Structure HR support activities to align with project execution and mobilization needs of the segment
  • Ensure a strong focus of the HR and leadership teams remains on supporting the workforce in creating an engaging workplace through a variety of people related programs and initiatives
  • Maintain a strong pulse on evolving employment legislation, industry trends and pressures in order to effectively manage / mitigate risk for the segment and organization
  • Take an active and assertive role in representing Aecon on joint venture projects, ensuring that Aecon’s interests, relating to people and staffing, are consistently considered.
  • Build strong relationships with HR counterparts on JVs to ensure ongoing collaboration and effective support of Aecon’s seconded employees.

  • Drive the delivery of effective talent management, total rewards, and employee / labor relations processes within the segment.
  • Develop and lead the long-term recruitment, development and succession strategy for the segment
  • Facilitate effective workforce planning efforts to proactively ensure talent is available and appropriately positioned across Civil East projects and across Aecon.
  • Actively participate in operational Senior Management Team meetings and engage senior leaders in robust dialogue on current and emerging people issues
  • Support the resolution of labour relations matters including complaints, legal challenges, jurisdictional disputes, sector disputes, grievances etc.

  • Continually identify opportunities to deliver HR best practices and to create consistency where necessary to support Aecon’s strategic mandate
  • Collaborate and assist Aecon’s various HR project teams in achieving project milestones / objectives
  • Support technological enhancements in HR, ensuring team alignment and client engagement with appropriate tools. A strong focus on data governance to facilitate valuable analytics is critical.
  • Support and drive participation in Aecon’s employee programs including Aecon Accolades, Achievement Awards, Diversity & Inclusion among others.
  • Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Minimum of fifteen years progressive professional human resources experience, including no less than five years’ experience at a leadership level
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or related field
  • Ability to travel off-site on a frequent, scheduled and ad-hoc basis
  • Experience in construction or related industry is preferred
  • Experience with and understanding of implementation complexities within a large, diverse operating structure
  • Experience with working in a matrixed environment and engaging / obtaining buy-in
  • Knowledge in current and emerging industry and market trends
  • Demonstrated success working with complex partners, competitors, and internal / external stakeholders
