Position Purpose :
The Assistant Controller will be required to direct and manage the accounts payable function, billing and accounts receivable function and the day to day treasury function by establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures, as well as preparation of financial reports for Management.
The Assistant Controller will supervise and manage four direct reports. The Assistant Controller will be working closely with management to articulate accounting policies, procedures, risk and controls.
The role will require an individual that is an accomplished self-starter with a proven background in managing accounting functions and creating controls.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for updating the ERP system with project change orders and directives by ensuring the projects teams are providing adequate support for the approval of the change orders from the customers
Responsible for maintaining department budgets in the ERP system
Records the daily cash receipts in the system
Responsible for approving EFT and cheque payments
Prepares, analyzes and presents weekly cash flow forecasts
Submits weekly and monthly payroll source deductions and WSIB
Reconciles and submits the monthly union dues
Prepares, reconciles and submits the monthly HST return
In charge of setting up of new vendors and customers by ensuring there is proper supporting and appropriate authorization
Responsible for implementing management action plans in response to internal audit recommendations
Prepare year-end audit working papers for external auditors and provide them with the requested information
Ensure all internal financial reporting requirements by management and corporate parent, are met
Work with operations to define, measure, analyze, improve and control current processes which impact stakeholder reporting quality and influence internal operating efficiency
Accountable for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information produced by the direct reports
Hiring, training, mentoring and supervising direct reports
Designation in CPA or equivalent (CMA, CGA)
5+ years’ experience in senior finance / accounting role (Assistant Controller, Senior accounting manager, etc.)
Experience in a construction company is an asset
Work experience in reconciling and submission of payroll withholding and union dues
Knowledge of IFRS reporting standards
Able to develop, mentor and challenge / engage staff
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently in a busy environment
Able to work well under pressure
Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures
Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
Strong knowledge with ERP systems (e.g. Maestro)
