The Controller, Seaspan Shipyards, is responsible for financial reporting, balance sheet control, financial governance, financial systems and management of financial transactions.

The successful candidate will ensure that accounting processes and systems are efficient and effective, and that financial reporting for business decision-making is prepared in a timely and accurate manner.

Furthermore, the Controller will provide leadership to the controllership teams for the Vancouver Shipyard, Vancouver Drydock and Victoria Shipyard, while collaborating with the direct report team of the CFO and other leadership at Seaspan Shipyards and Seaspan ULC.

The role reports to the Chief Financial Officer of Seaspan Shipyards.

Duties / Accountabilities

  • Leadership to develop and manage standards, processes and internal controls to ensure the accuracy of information and the existence of appropriate safeguards to protect the operation's assets.
  • Drive communication and collaboration with, and support for, pre-production and operation departments, support functions, and shared services teams.
  • Support the preparation of materials for Washington Company and Board reporting requirements.
  • Lead the processes to determine and set rates with customers; most importantly, manage the process of setting annual rates with the Federal government contracts, using the PWGSC SACC Manual and standard government cost accounting practices (SCAP) as a framework.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely invoicing and tracking of accounts receivable. Responsible for the credit analysis of all new customers, and for recommending terms for all third-party customers in compliance with the credit approval policy.
  • Works closely with the management team on overdue accounts to resolve payment issues.

  • Support the Chief Financial Officer, Seaspan Shipyards and FP&A team to develop the annual operating and capital budgets for the shipyard division, to be incorporated into the corporate budget.
  • Also, support forecast updates as required.

  • Provide effective processes for governance for Authorizations for Expenditure (AFEs), documentation of business cases, determining capitalization and tracking of capital expenditures.
  • Administer these processes.

  • Build and maintain systems and procedures for departments in the control of their operating and project budgets.
  • Responsible for the preparation of shipyards timely and accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial information that will facilitate the development of business reporting packages.
  • Ensure all financial transactions present fairly the financial position of the company and that they have been recorded in accordance with accounting standards and accounting policy.
  • Leadership to maintain, upgrade and expand the financial systems used for all financial reporting and analysis.
  • Manage, monitor and continuously improve the Shipyards’ month-end close, consolidation and reporting timeline, optimizing efficiency, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
  • Lead and manage the standardization of financial reporting data, establishing, documenting and communicating data definitions, report structures and master data standards for Shipyards’ reporting.
  • Project manages the Shipyards’ annual audit process with the external auditor, continuously improving this process year-over-year.
  • In collaboration with the shared services Controller.

  • Desired Education and Experience

    Great Controller candidates may have a variety of experiences that will lead to outstanding leadership, performance and judgment needed in the role.

    Some desirable experiences include :

  • University degree in accounting, business, or commerce and a recognized accounting designation : CA, CPA, CGA or CMA.
  • Leadership experience such as being a Controller or Director of Finance, or similar roles demonstrating financial team leadership.
  • 10-15 years of relevant and progressive experience, which ideally would include experience in an industrial, manufacturing or large project environment where effective cost control, project management, material management, financial and project accounting, and timely work in progress reporting are all critical to the success of the organization.
  • Experience with government procurement and cost accounting principles and practices.
  • Experience implementing or upgrading financial systems.
  • Experience maintaining effective governance.
