Duties / Accountabilities

  • Conducts safety inspections, coordinates toolbox talks, conducts and completes hazard assessments on processes and individual projects, education / training needs and training coordination.
  • Tracks safety issues and facilitates safety improvements. Keeps a record of all infractions.
  • Trains supervisors and workers in the appropriate use of equipment and materials.
  • Identifies and corrects situations that pose an immediate danger to life or health (IDLH). Follows up with corrective measures when unsafe acts are detected.
  • Conducts testing and sampling as required.

  • Trains workers in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including fit testing of respirators for workers.
  • Conducts confined space testing and issuing permits. Inspects work areas and issues hot work permits. Advises and participates in correct lockout procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Provides new employee and sub-contractor orientation sessions. Conducts site safety tours / orientations for visitors (customers, potential customers, contractors, government agencies, etc.).
  • Keeps abreast of knowledge in occupational health and safety and when necessary upgrades credentials. Maintains current First Aid Certification status.
  • Assists the Site Coordinator in developing, controlling, issuing and publicizing Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensures workers are informed and cognizant of safety rules and regulations by advising and training workers on the correct methods, providing advice with regard to the special needs of workers, and actively seeking solutions to their concerns.
  • Facilitates safety program improvements by assisting with health and safety system audits, reviewing findings, working towards implementing changes, and instructing supervisors and sub-contractors on various safety and hygiene issues, e.
  • g. the safe work practices required for the use of hand and power tools.

  • Assists supervisors with accident and near-miss investigations, aids in defining appropriate corrective actions, and makes follow up recommendations to prevent reoccurrences are implemented.
  • Participates with the site emergency response team. Attends all emergencies and directs the workforce away from danger.
  • Assists emergency personnel with their duties and liaises with local emergency response agencies.

  • Helps injured workers returning to work through the Graduated Return to Work (GRTW) program. Liaises with site supervisor / foreman regarding appropriate GRTW schedule and / or modified duties.
  • Conducts initial ergonomic risk assessments, identifies issues and proposes appropriate solutions.
  • Assists the Washington Group Rehabilitation Consultant with investigating muscular skeletal injuries and with formulating solutions and processes to prevent similar types of injuries.
  • Works in confined space environments.

  • Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Construction Safety Officer or similar accreditation through a recognized training authority
  • Three or more years related experience gained in a heavy industrial construction setting (mining, oil and gas, wood forest products, power generation).
  • Assets First Aid Level 1, 2 or 3, WHIMIS, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Aerial Work Platform
  • Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable Federal and Provincial legislation regarding Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Effective time management, organizational and problem-solving skills including an understanding of accident analysis and prevention.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. Must be able to coach, facilitate and influence a cultural and behavioral change in the workplace regarding safety.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, including the ability to effectively transfer knowledge to a diverse group of learners.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a team, provide situational leadership and communicate effectively both in formal and informal settings.
  • Must be able to work independently and initiate new ideas to challenge the status quo.
  • Familiarity with hot work environments and potential outcomes.
  • Strong computer word processing and spreadsheet skills.
  • Must be physically fit and able to enter confined spaces regularly as well as work at heights.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts.
  • Must be willing to participate in Emergency Response Team and conduct all of the functions and responsibilities associated with that role.
