As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Project Manager in our Ottawa office, you will work as part of a team of geotechnical engineers providing support and advice to the wider Jacobs business and clients as well as acting as team leader on your own projects.

You will lead in the delivery of geotechnical input to projects and will also be required to provide technical guidance and support to intermediate engineers and less experienced junior engineers.

Main responsibilities will include :

  • Perform a variety of engineering work from the initial planning and design through implementation and construction phase;
  • Perform conventional aspects of design engineering and analysis and carry out senior review of geotechnical design and analyses;
  • Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria;
  • Provide technical guidance to intermediate to junior engineers and designers / drafters;
  • Lead geotechnical projects / tasks from proposal level, to site investigation, design and construction supervision;
  • Carry out variety of soil mechanics analyses and design including bridges, highways, levees, flood walls and flood gates, water / wastewater treatment plants and commercial and industrial facilities, ground improvement, shoring, retaining structures and foundation engineering design; and,
  • Produce proposals, technical memorandums and reports.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil / Geological Engineering or related;
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario;
  • Minimum 15 years of all-round geotechnical engineering experience;
  • Ability to progress schemes from inception to design completion;
  • Advanced knowledge of geotechnical engineering, including :
  • oSite investigation, laboratory testing and instrumentation

    oDeep and shallow foundation design

    oSettlement calculations and selection of soil stiffness parameters

    oEmbankment design, slope stability and seepage analysis

    oDesign and analysis of earth retaining structures

    oDesign and analysis of barrier and cover systems

    oConstruction monitoring and supervision

  • The ability to produce accurate and well-presented reports is essential in this role;
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team; and,

  • Must have flexibility to include occasional travel for assignments.
  • The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience :

  • Master of Science or Engineering (M.SC. / M.Eng.) degree in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering preferred;
  • Registered P.Eng. in Quebec
  • Transportation geotechnical engineering with MTO experience and qualification;
  • Permafrost experience and cold climate design;
  • Experience on water projects including pipelines, outfalls, intakes and treatment plants; and,
  • Familiarity with geotechnical design software programs such as LPile, Slope / W, Seep / W, gINT, Settle3D, SHAKE, and Plaxis.
