Job Summary

The Executive Counsel role is a senior lawyer responsible for leveraging in-depth knowledge and expertise of a legal specialty to provide a broad range of cost-

effective, high quality legal services while representing Travelers. The Executive Counsel role is considered a company, and or industry expert and handles highly complex matters with significant impact to the business.

The Executive Counsel role may manage lawyers and / or support staff in a highly collaborative legal and business environment.

The Executive Counsel role is a senior leader on the Travelers Canada Legal and Compliance team.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

Advises senior management on alternatives, outcomes and legal actions which have a sizeable impact on company business and future operations.

Helps to interpret broad enterprise leadership strategies into actionable projects and tasks. Directs or conducts research of legal principles and precedents within area of specialization or expertise.

Proactively identifies and communicates risk to internal and / or external customers and provides recommendations on how to mitigate that risk.

Drafts, negotiates and executes highly complex legal documents with a focus on property casualty insurance products Maintains awareness of external judicial climate and legal developments.

Builds and maintains strong internal and external client relationships. Acts as a mentor and coach to less senior lawyers , paralegal / staff.

Makes effective use of technology and automation in the practice of law. May represent Travelers on trade association committees and / or boards.

May prepare or review annual legal fees budget for assigned matters. Review invoices from outside counsel and recommend adjustments.

Within authority level, approve invoices. Proactively builds productive working relationships across the Legal services discipline and broader enterprise.

If managing others, is able to effectively delegate to, coach & develop and leverage employees’ unique talents to enhance organizational effectiveness.

Is able to proactively identify and tackle significant problems and develop solutions that will often benefit the broader Travelers organization.

Often sought out by leadership to lead projects and tackle challenges that cross lines of business and / or legal services groups.

Is widely considered an influential thought leader. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of prior legal experience, a significant portion of which is in property casualty insurance. Prior leadership experience.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge

Property casualty insurance product, coverage and / or insurance business and regulatory experience in the Canadian market.

Experience with Federal and Provincial insurance regulatory and business matters.
