The incumbent is responsible for assessing the skills of the navigating personnel upon hiring. He structures the courses and develops training material based on the official training plan of the Company.

He prepares, coordinates and provides training to make them self-sufficient in their home port, and this, in all operational conditions.

He takes part in the official appointment process and periodically assesses the navigating personnel. He will be required to travel occasionally.


  • As a content expert, produce detailed course sheets using the official training plan and develop theoretical and practical content;
  • Participate in the hiring process of new apprentice captains;
  • Occasionally assess the progress, content and strategies and implement changes to ensure that training is effective and appropriate;
  • Disseminate theoretical and practical training and monitor the formal training plan;
  • Gradually bring apprentice captains to become self-sufficient in all operational conditions and at the end of the training, evaluate skills acquisition and participate in decisions regarding the authorization to sail on the vessels of Ocean Towing and Navigation;
  • Ensure that costs give a good return for the company and meet the budget;
  • Coordinate skills assessment for all captains where necessary and monitor the needs for training and retraining;
  • Contribute his expertise in special projects (e.g. : towing plan, salvage expert, etc.).

  • Valid Master 3000 gross tonnage near coastal Captain Certificate;
  • Experience with Safety Management System (SMS) and ISM standards;
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable maritime regulations;
  • Leadership;
  • Bilingual in French and English;
  • Significant experience with conventional and azimuth thruster (Z-drive) tugs (minimum 5 years);
  • Good sense of pedagogy and organization;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Administrative position (office) IN Quebec city;
  • Full-time (40 hours / wk) day schedule, occasionally during evenings and on weekends if required;
  • Occasional travels;
  • Salary to be discussed based on skills and work experience.
