The Coalition, the game studio that develops the Gears of War franchise, is looking for a Intermediate Data Engineer to join our team working on next-generation Gears experiences.

We are seeking talented, experienced developers with a variety of backgrounds who want to redefine the Gears experience through the application of modern cloud database technologies and various telemetry solutions.

The Coalition’s Online Services & BI team builds data services that measure and influence many aspects of the game, including in-game economies and commerce, player statistics, user generated content, matchmaking, and game content management.

We follow an agile, iterative, and quality driven software development lifecycle. We value development of reliable data pipelines and usable data insights.

We embrace DevOps and build our features to be supportable and easy to troubleshoot.

In addition to the standard Microsoft SQL Server tech stack, you’d be working with a broad set of other service technologies including :

NoSQL data management (Azure Table, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Blob)

Azure Data Lake

Azure HDInsights / Hadoop

Azure Databricks

Azure Data Explorer / KUSTO

C# / .net

Streaming Telemetry (Azure Event Hub)

Online Gaming Platforms (Xbox Live)

Search (Azure Search)


Help engineer a modern data pipeline to collect, organize, and process data Work closely with analysts, designers and production teams to define telemetry events Work with analysts and data science team members to support data projects Build a holistic understanding of our product features, its customers, the BI data infrastructure, and business goals Assist with planning, estimation and distribution of work Develop deployment processes and mechanisms Institute and maintain secure workflows that are compliant with all current privacy standards Interface with business users and engineering teams to bridge the gap in terms of data needs and understanding Produce and document clean, reusable code that is tested, reviewed, and adheres to all current code and MS standards Leverage industry best practices in establishing repeatable BI practices, principles & processes


Degree in Computing Science, or equivalent experience Minimum 5+ years experience building database and ETL solutions Expertise in database technology with solid understanding and hands-on skills with SQL Server, SSIS, solid understanding of SSAS / n-dimensional cubes Experience building business intelligence solutions (data warehouse, datamart, ETL, Reports) and ability to understand instrumentation and devise technical solutions Experience with unstructured datasets (Hadoop, Cosmos, Data Bricks, Python) Experience supporting a live production database with frequent refreshes of content and code Experience architecting scalable cloud based solutions for data analytics Experience deploying and supporting applications on cloud platforms (preferrably Azure) Experience in analyzing big data using statistical tools such as SQL, C# and statistics Able to demonstrate knowledge of solid software engineering practices, experience with SCRUM / agile based methodologies a plus Familiarity with object oriented programming languages (C++, C#, Java) Excellent collaborative skills, consultative and customer-facing skills, strong client services orientation Ability to influence diverse audiences and build strong partnerships with stakeholders Self-starter who works well within a creative team Must be able to complete tasks in a timely manner Dynamic problem solver
