Work duties may include : Operation, installation, maintenance, repair of all Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning, Refrigeration systems, components and equipment providing optimum physical environmental conditions for the occupants, management and staff of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) facilities.

Work environment

The Technical Services, Prairie Region, of Correctional Service Canada is a stimulating and dynamic environment whose mission is to ensure the operation, compliance and sustainability of a real estate portfolio of more than $ 8 billion dollars in an operational environment .

We are responsible for institutions and penitentiary clusters as well as parole offices and community correctional centers located throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The facilities we manage are diverse such as buildings and structures, building mechanics systems, electrical distribution networks, infrastructures, generators, oil tanks, thermal power stations, water treatment and purification plants, roads, fences and barriers, and automobile fleets to name only a few.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)


  • A secondary school diploma or a satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma;
  • or an acceptable combination of education, training and / or experience.


    Completion of a Certificate or Diploma program, or apprenticeship accreditation

    program leading to qualification as a :

  • Building Services Technician, or
  • Building Systems Technician, or
  • Facilities Technician, or
  • Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Technician, or
  • Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Technician, or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of relevant Building Trade, Technician, Technologist, and / or stationary engineer

    Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of Commercial and / or Institutional

    building systems such as :

  • Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems;
  • Boilers;
  • Compressors; and / or Walk-in coolers and freezers,
  • Experience operating a variety of specialized maintenance tools, and equipment, including test equipment required for the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment.

    Experience with the use of various computer software programs such as : Microsoft Word,

    Excel and Outlook.

    If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)



    Successful completion of any work related continuing education courses related to relevant facility maintenance or workplace safety.


    Qualified under the Boiler and Pressure Vessel regulations of the Province of

    employment to operate all the employer’s hot water and / or low pressure steam boilers.

    Possession of a Provincial Fourth Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency

    or Possession of a Provincial or the Interprovincial Standard (Red Seal) Endorsement

    for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or Millwrights or College Graduate in the field of

    HVAC systems or Mechanical systems.

    Qualification to inspect, maintain, repair, and test building fire safety systems as fire alarm

    and / or sprinkler systems, firefighting equipment, fire separation doors and dampers.

    Other certifications such as journeyman accreditation or diploma relevant to facility


    Experience working with Computer Maintenance Management Systems, Building

    Automation or Management Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC),

    Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

    Experience performing any of the following relevant functions to the duties of the position :

  • Simple metal work and metal fabrication, such as basic welding, brazing, soldering,
  • cutting, grinding and bending.

    Experience working in a correctional, industrial or institutional environment.

    Knowledge of workplace health and safety.

    Knowledge of the applicable codes and regulations relevant to the maintenance and operations of building mechanical systems.

    Knowledge of the principles and practices required for maintenance of acceptable indoor air quality and optimization of building energy efficiency.

    Knowledge of best practices for the preventive and corrective maintenance of building systems, machinery and equipment.


    Ability to troubleshoot system failures and malfunctions to initiate or propose solutions.

    Ability to work under pressure.

    Ability to communicate orally.

    Ability to communicate in writing.

    Requirement to occasionally work on evenings, week-ends, and / or holidays

    overtime, call back, shift work, standby. (applies only to some regions).

    Requirement to comply with applicable provisions of CSA Standard Z94.4-02

    Selection, Use and Care of Respirators, when duties require use of a respirator.

    Willingness to work with and / or instruct inmates where applicable.

    Valid Drivers Licence

    Requirement to lift and carry items weighing up to 23 kg
