This position will carry out instrument operation and analysis as well as be responsible for both routine and non-routine instrument maintenance / troubleshooting in one of the following areas : Gas Chromatography, ICP Spectroscopy, Liquid Chromatography, Segmented Flow analysis / Wet Chemistry.
The coordination and performance of various sample preparation techniques may also be required.
Uses an applied approach in performing moderate / complex technological functions within laboratory operations including method validation
Conducts applied research and experimental testing under the direction of the Technical team
May troubleshoot and repair equipment or components under the guidance of Senior team members
Works from, detailed specifications and verbal instructions.
Interprets and evaluates results.
Calibration and set up of equipment prior to analysis.
Maintain and record equipment calibrations.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of LIMS
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of QMS & may be required to investigate corrective actions
Carries out routine and non-routine equipment maintenance
Strong technical knowledge of instrumentation and analytical techniques
Will approve data without direction of supervisor
Initiative and independent judgment required in applying standard procedures.
Maintains a clean working environment.
Provide guidance and training to more junior laboratory personnel.
Follows all company health, safety and environmental policies.
Follows all Quality system protocols and reports any discrepancies to the Supervisor.
May be asked to work in other areas of the Environmental services department when needed.
May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.
A post-secondary education (degree and / or diploma) in a Science related program (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science) is required.
A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a laboratory setting is required. 5-8 years is strongly encouraged.
A minimum of 3-5 years of instrumentation experience is required. 5-8 years is strongly encouraged.
Demonstration of advanced technical instrumentation knowledge (specific areas of expertise may include one or more of the following : ICP-OES, ICP-MS, GC, GC-MS, IC, LC, LC-MS, segmented flow analyzers).
Good hand / eye coordination when handling samples & various equipment.
Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
Able to work well under pressure during high (peak) workloads and balancing conflicting demands of high volume versus the quality of results.
Candidates should be proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, instrument software, etc.).
Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
Ability to work well with others & independently.
Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
Works well under pressure.
Extended hours and shift-work may be required from time-to-time.
Travel to other SGS locations may be required from time-to-time.
