IPEX Technologies Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Research & Development Engineer to be located at its R&D Centre of Excellence in Mississauga, Ontario.

IPEX designs and manufactures one of the world’s most diverse lines of integrated thermoplastic piping systems pipe, valves, fittings, auxiliary components and tools all engineered from the ground up to handle the full range of today’s municipal, industrial, electrical and mechanical applications.

You will work closely with our team of scientists and engineers to accelerate the launch of new products to the market, the development of advanced polymer compounds to enhance IPEX’s leadership position in thermoplastic piping solutions, as well as supporting internal and external stakeholders with R&D support requirements.

You will coordinate, manage and report on a wide range of activities ensuring projects are delivered on time, budget and meet project scope and stakeholder objectives.

Requirements

R&D activities include :

  • Developing new vinyl formulations for the extrusion and molding areas
  • Running extrusion and injection molding trials in our pilot production facility
  • Researching and testing next generation engineered thermoplastic materials
  • Sourcing alternative raw material ingredients to optimize existing product performance
  • Support of internal and external stakeholders including testing protocols, reverse engineering, quality control, forensic analysis, and polymer formulation ingredient assessments
  • Conducting processing evaluations which involves travel to other IPEX facilities
  • Partnerships with external laboratories to assist research and development efforts
  • Evaluating new process equipment for the R & D area
  • Keeping of project records such as project briefs, lab recording book, information data base
  • Conducting 5S and following all safety practice guidelines during work activities
  • Evaluation of new vinyl formulations through process and analytical testing
  • Develop a clear understanding of process equipment and evaluation techniques
  • Accurate record keeping of activities and final report presentations
  • Close interaction with other R & D staff on joint project activities
  • Develop best practices and standard operating procedures based on successful benchmark activities
  • Investigation and coordination of new technologies for the development of advanced polymer compounds
  • Coordinate and report on activities with internal and external stakeholders, as well as with external vendors, agencies and research partners
  • Lean 5S and Health and Safety for specific activities in the R&D group to create optimal workspaces, workflows, processes and procedures
  • As a key team member, represent the R&D group within and outside of the IPEX organization
  • Principal Responsibilities

  • Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Polymer Science, Chemical or Mechanical engineering, Material Science or Chemistry is required
  • Practical application processing experience with Injection molding and or Extrusion systems
  • Experience to perform testing using a variety of lab instruments including FTIR, DSC, TGA, Tensile, Izod, etc.
  • A background in interacting and collaborating with scientific and engineering personnel would be an asset
  • Experience in an Research and Development environment would be an asset
  • Proven track record of managing numerous projects and delivering results according to plan
  • Excellent communication (listening, oral and written) and interpersonal skills to compliment problem solving abilities
  • Ability to collaborate across a wide geographical area, in a cross-functional team environment that includes all segments of our business
  • Must be driven, structured, results oriented with a positive and professional attitude
  • Knowledge and experience in Design of Experiments (DOE) would be an asset
  • Ability to travel to different IPEX locations and external testing labs for project needs
