Department : Environmental Modelling

Duration : 8 months

Discipline : Toxicology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Immunology and other Biological Sciences majors in an undergraduate College or University program.

Year of study : 1st year, 2nd year or 3rd year


All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term.

Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.

Students must submit a resume, cover letter and copy of an up-to-date transcript by the posting close date of September 18, 2019 to ensure consideration for student employment in the first round of interviews.

Positions will remain posted until September 23, 2019 to allow for a second round of candidates / interviews, if required.


The Environmental Sciences Branch (ESB) at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) conducts research and development (R&D) for the Canadian nuclear industry.

ESB provides services related to the interactions between radiation, radionuclides, biological / ecological systems and the physical environment.

The research is focussed on understanding the fate, transport and impact of radionuclides in the environment, and developing and applying technologies and approaches to mitigate negative effects.

This is a very exciting opportunity for a young technologist or scientist and we look forward to working with the student hired as they grow their skills in our lab.


  • Preparation of culture water and culture substrates.
  • Laboratory analyses of water samples for parameters such as temperature, pH, conductivity, harness, dissolved oxygen, ammonia.
  • Performing experiments and obtaining data as directed.
  • Collection, processing and environmental / radiological analyses of samples.
  • Carrying out routine operation, tests and measurement which may require expensive and delicate laboratory and field instrument.
  • Fieldwork, which requires all-weather outdoor work and moderate to high physical effort at times

  • Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to safe environmental laboratory and fieldwork practices.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, with chemical preparations and analyses, ability to follow procedures.
  • Experience in environmental sample collection.
  • Organization skills in completing laboratory records.
  • Physical ability to work in the laboratory and in the field.
