Merchandise Planner

The Merchandise Planner is primarily responsible for translating the Merchants’ vision into viable plans and profitable results.

The Merchandise Planner is responsible for developing and maintaining sales, inventory, and margin plans that tie to financial targets for an assigned Category.

The Merchandise Planner generates plans that incorporate statistically-based forecasts, merchandise plans and business knowledge.

Pre-Season

  • Build a category / class plan based on guidance from the Director of Planning & Allocation for one specific season;
  • Partner with Merchants to create and maintain a seasonal assortment plan and volume targets by channel and country;
  • Develop assortment plans for sales, margin and inventory in support of productivity and financial targets;
  • Incorporate impact of events and entrance / exit strategies;
  • Propose initial and promotional pricing by item.
  • In-Season

  • Analyze and reflect current trends in performance of strategy based on actual sales performance; revise in-season plans for sales and profitability, control inventory levels;
  • Partner with Merchant to develop and propose actions in response to current business trends;
  • Manage and execute promotional and liquidation strategy;
  • Work with Allocation to formulate alternate event options;
  • Actively manage and update core sales and inventory flowcharts by pulling up, pushing back or cancelling orders and by working with the merchant to recommend reorders.
  • Reporting / Analytics
  • Analyze results for relevant product categories relative to plan and trend performance for monthly / seasonal sales, margin and inventory;
  • Prepare recommendations and alternatives for key financial meetings / decisions in order to maximize sales and margin and optimize inventory productivity, in partnership with Merchant.
  • Participate in meetings as needed.
  • Integration Points

  • Partner with Merchant, Allocation, Finance and Marketing to make informed decisions on promotional events and season planning;
  • Partner with Allocation, Merchants and Marketing on exit strategies, new item launches and collections; provide recommendations in response to financial targets;
  • Partner with Allocation to establish and implement short- and long-term inventory management objectives and review order quantities;
  • Perform analysis and provide recommendations to the planning and merchant team.

    Qualifications

    5-7 years of retail planning experience, inventory management, allocation or replenishment experience, financial planning or financial analysis experience

    Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or Statistics

  • Assortment planning experience;
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; proactively problem solves and recommends solutions;
  • Strong aptitude with numbers; retail math skills;
  • Ability to identify and influence critical stakeholders;
  • Builds collaborative partnerships cross-functionally

  • Strong communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to articulate detailed action plans to successfully accomplish goals;
  • Understands and executes against business strategy and goals.
