Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is the fast-moving, award-winning technology engine that powers Scotiabank’s Corporate and Investment Banking and Capital Markets businesses.

The Role

We’re looking for a Technical Analyst to join the Global Derivatives and Risk Technology (GDRT) team and ensure individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the GDRT’s business strategies and objectives.

A key part of this role is ensuring all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

In this role, as a Technical Analyst you’ll :

  • Assist the Senior Manager / Project Manager in resolving highly complex, multi-faceted problems to meet the needs of the supported Line of Business, by applying their financial and technological knowledge to the design of methodologies, models, and / or systems solutions.
  • This may involve rapid prototyping, with requirements and solutions developed on an iterative basis that provides interim deliverables until a final production solution is created, which includes conducting research and analysis, accurately and clearly defining user requirements and processes, and liaising with the users.

  • Analyze deal term sheets and structured product confirmations which involves navigating, interpreting, and deriving the financial mechanics of a transaction outline in legal language and partner closely with front office and trade floor risk management teams to ensure portfolio limit monitoring is defined and applied appropriately.
  • Read and write VBA Code to update existing or add new functionality to MS Access and Excel based tools used to calculate margin requirements, settlement amounts and monitor portfolio limits and provide production support for systems and tools required by front, middle and back office business units in a timely manner and within pre-defined service level agreements.
  • Participate in the systems implementation process by developing test cases, performing testing, defining user procedures and workflows, developing conversion and implementation strategies, verifying conversion, providing user documentation, providing user training, and providing post-implementation support.
  • Cy continually acquiring and enhancing knowledge of the Division's business strategies and policies, risk management practices and methodologies, product offerings, financial markets, financial instruments, regulatory requirements, Back Office processes, and rapidly changing technology, you’ll provide effective business solutions and services to the end user business lines.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day
  • Be responsible for undertaking small projects (
  • 500 workdays), with budgets of approximately $500,000. The systems developed are on-line real time, mission critical applications to support the trading and risk management operations where the consequence of implementing functionality based on inaccurate requirements could expose the Bank to significant losses or undue risk.

  • Guide Bank policy and receive general supervision from both the Director and the Senior Manager, and direction from individual Project Managers.
  • You’re expected to function independently to ensure that the project's objectives are met, while ensuring that management is kept informed and that problems are escalated appropriately.

    Work Environment

    This role is based in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. Concentrated use of sight and touch at a computer terminal on average 3-4 hrs / day is expected.

    The Technical Analyst must work under tight deadlines, conflicting priorities and changing project requirements and be able to react quickly to resolve problems and work overtime on occasion to meet deadlines and to implement systems with minimal impact to the end users.

    Minimum Qualifications required for this role :

  • 3+ years practical experience in capital markets.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to use diplomacy, judgement, and persuasion to secure stakeholder agreement and co-operation
  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree or technical institute degree / certificate or equivalent post-secondary education in computer science, business, economics or mathematics.
  • Experience in capital markets technology
  • Advanced to expert knowledge of reading and writing VBA programming language
  • Experience interpreting legal language related to financial instruments
  • Project team collaboration experience with end users and technical staff
