Key Role

The primary focus for the Senior API Product Owner is to innovate, develop and deliver our suite of API products to meet industry, community and corporate objectives.

The incumbent is responsible for working with inter-disciplinary teams to support the management of new and existing products that drive service initiatives success.

The incumbent is responsible for identifying market needs and developing software solutions that drive customer value, while collaborating with other internal functional stakeholders (e.

g. Industry Relations, Industry Engagement, Industry Managed Solutions and Operations) to ensure stakeholder goals are met.

The Senior API Product Owner is the subject matter expert of the API product, fully understands benefits and values to the business, and can effectively communicate those benefits to others.

The Senior API Product owner will play a lead role in designing and implementing a comprehensive set of APIs for our subscribers and industry partners, working closely with our Enterprise Architects, Business Solutions Architects and our technology teams.

The Senior API Product owner will own the prioritization of API backlog, defining the right KPIs, preparing presentations and helping launch the APIs into production.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of the GS1 Canada API platform for subscribers, developers and partners looking to integrate with GS1 Canada
  • Designs and develops new and enhanced APIs based on industry needs and competitive insights
  • Acts as the subject matter expert on new offerings and trends, through research, analysis and market insights monitoring
  • In partnership with the Director, Business Solutions, builds various elements of product viability through strong documentation of the technical and business strategy for the assigned product portfolio
  • Meets directly with key subscribers to elicit feedback, collaborate on pilot projects and in support of new subscriber acquisition
  • Ensures industry requirements are captured by reviewing feedback from focus groups, customer interviews and workshops, the standards development processes, as well as testing and pilot programs
  • Work directly with industry partners to understand user requirements and the overall subscriber journey and develop into a viable development roadmap
  • Develops, and articulates to an executive audience, business cases, project(s) scope, product definition, including benefits, features and benefits, business rationale and financial projections
  • Leads agile development for assigned portfolio, including the support of spring planning, backlog grooming, user story creation, UAT and other development activities
  • Develops strategies for new and existing products, including planning and communicating operational rollout
  • Manages complex stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, ensuring all industry partners and stakeholders are appropriately engaged and updated on all relevant product plans
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with all internal teams to ensure stakeholder goals are met
  • Leads relationship management with technology and industry partners
  • Facilitates establishment of product priorities and communicates to solution providers as required
  • Assists finance and IMS leads in establishing pricing to meet revenue and cost recovery targets
  • Supports marketing in developing core positioning and messaging for the product
  • Prepares high level sales presentations to stakeholders as required
  • Reviews and analyses performance metrics to ensure successful execution
  • Leads capital planning efforts and collaboratively manages a large capital budget
  • Performs various other duties as delegated or assigned
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree within Business, Technology, Engineering or Marketing (MBA preferred)
  • Minimum five years of software product management experience, ideally managing APIs as a product in a B2B environment, including innovation and market research
  • A customer-first orientation and a history of going above and beyond for B2B customers
  • Ability to identify mutual benefits, anticipate and overcome challenges, mitigate risks and drive product success
  • Adaptable with a track record of balancing immediate needs with long-term priorities
  • Fluency with building effective business cases and articulating succinct business rationale to an executive audience, including financial projections
  • Ability to build strong go-to-market plans with consideration to market conditions, revenue / ROI forecasts and penetration rate
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Natural technical / business curiosity and a willingness to get into the details of a solution to own the experience as the business prime
  • Excellent communication skills to be able to influence peers and executives, as well as external partners
  • Strong relationship building and influencing within a matrix organization
  • Strong collaboration skills, including managing internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to facilitate diverse customer discussions and negotiate requirements using a discovery workshop or focus group approach
  • Experience in product development or service design an asset
  • Expertise in Agile product development and working with SaaS platforms an asset
  • Experience with sales and operations an asset
  • Pragmatic Marketing or Sequent Learning Networks Certification an asset
  • Certified Scrum Product Owner Designation an asset
