Job Summary and Requirements

This competition will be used to fill permanent and term Social Worker positions, as well as Community Mobile Social Worker positions, within Yukon Family and Children’s Services Branch in the next 12-

month period. Positions are located both in Whitehorse and the in Yukon communities. Preference will be given to qualified persons with Aboriginal ancestry.

We are looking for qualified Social Workers interested in a collaborative practice to provide a broad range of social work services to Yukon’s public.

Services include the following :

  • Child welfare; child protection, family support, child-in-care, foster care, adoptions
  • Youth justice; youth probation, alternative measures
  • Social assistance; income support, emergency services, adult services
  • Adult protection; assisting adults that may be at risk of abuse
  • Community development; working collaboratively with First Nations, RCMP, health units, schools, etc. to respond to issues and build capacity within a community
  • Teams that make up Family and Children’s Services’ Branch are committed to delivering social work services in partnership with Yukon communities, Yukon First Nations and other service providers throughout the territory.

    Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications specifically how your work experiences and related duties align with the essential qualifications shown below.

  • Bachelor of Social Work; and,
  • Social work experience and / or practicum in providing services to families, children and individuals.
  • Candidates who are currently students in a Bachelor of Social Work program, who can demonstrate the essential qualifications through internships, practicums, cooperative and voluntary placements, and that have verification of graduation in December 2018 may be considered;
  • Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

    Candidates should have and may be assessed on :

  • Demonstrated interest in rural Yukon social work;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment with an emphasis on Yukon First Nation’s culture;
  • Strong knowledge and experience in social work principles and practices in child welfare and case management;
  • Demonstrates interest in child and family services including child protection;
  • Sound ethical decision making skills that demonstrates the capacity to complete family, children and individual assessments at a professional level;
  • Excellent decision making skills and practice guided by the Canadian Association of Social Work Code of Ethics;
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and professional partnerships that demonstrates a professional level of written and oral communication;
  • Ability to take a broad-based, strategic approach to community development in response to mandated client service;
  • Ability to prepare affidavits or court documents and intervention services including investigations and core protection services; and,
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Additional Information :

    Conditions of Employment : Security Clearance with vulnerable sectors, valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent, verification of Bachelor of Social Work

    Job Requirements : Willingness to work in rural communities. Travel is required. This position is also required to provide coverage for other workers as needed.

    Frequent evening, weekend and statutory holiday work hours are required.
