Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, this position, within the Design and Engineering Department, supervises the work of electrical drafting staff.
Projects typically include renovations and additions to existing buildings and utility distributions systems, alterations to offices, classrooms, meeting and conference rooms.
Specialized work includes renovations to laboratories and commercial kitchens as well as other types of spaces and facilities involving modifications and additions to campus electrical distribution systems, infrastructure systems and other University facilities involving high voltage substations.
Modifications and additions to lighting systems, high and low voltage distribution systems, emergency power and lighting control systems, fire alarm systems, alarms and electronic locking systems, communication systems including voice and computer cabling systems and other special services.
The incumbent acts as the sub-consultant to the Architect (prime consultant) on most projects and prime consultant for projects with a mainly engineering scope.
Professional services include all aspects of electrical engineering as defined by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) and encompass client liaison, preparation of preliminary feasibility and designs studies, reports and cost estimates, detailed design layouts, value engineering, preparation of technical working drawings and specifications, wiring control diagrams, application of seal to drawings in the electrical discipline, issuing drawings for permit, construction, tendering and performing construction review, and contract administration.
The position ensures Ontario Building Code (OBC) compliance on engineering matters, deals with the authorities having jurisdiction and ensures compliance with the University Design Standards and other applicable standards and codes.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES :
Maintains current technical knowledge within the discipline of electrical engineering. Maintains knowledge of current codes and legislation as they pertain to electrical engineering.
Provides expert advice and / or guidance on technical issues to departmental staff and others as required.
Establishes and maintains effective relationships with clients, from both academic and administrative units. Explains technical information in non-
technical terms where necessary. Ensures clients’ questions and concerns are addressed.
Provides guidance to electrical drafting staff involved in the production of construction documents.
Responds to RFIs, issues Site Instructions, reviews shop drawings, reviews progress claims, reviews CCN estimates and makes recommendations, conducts substantial performance review and final review, issues substantial performance and completion letters to the authorities having jurisdiction, reviews and approves as-
built records and close-out document submissions.
Attends commissioning and start-up meetings.
University degree in Electrical Engineering with license to practice in the Province of Ontario; registered and in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
Minimum 8 years’ related experience in electrical design and documentation with demonstrated experience working on institutional and laboratory projects.
TECHNICAL SKILLS :
Proficiency in AutoCad 2016, Excel, MS Word, MS Project.
