The Pathologist Assistant performs gross description and dissection of routine and complex surgical specimens and refer to Pathologists as required.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
Gross description and dissection of complex surgical specimens as well as routine specimens.
Participate in Pathologists continuing education Rounds.
Perform recut wet on request
Oversee the receipt and documentation of specimens and assist Laboratory staff with troubleshooting and problem solving collection, receipt and gross dissection problems.
Alert Pathologists to unique, interesting or concerning cases with potential to compromise accurate and timely diagnosis
Consult with Pathologists and Grossing Director as required
Selection of blocks for hormone receptors, tumor markers, clinical trials, etc.
In conjunction with the Anatomical pathology management team, participate in annual competency assessment of histotechnician
Collaborative approach to working with a team of professional and technical colleagues
Significant experience and knowledge of Human Anatomy, Advanced Medical terminology, Mechanisms of Disease, Clinical and General Pathology, Pathology, Histology, Embryology, Histotechnology, Immunohistochemistry and Laboratory Safety.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to use a microscope
Intermediate computer skills
5 years grossing experience with a particular emphasis on malignancies
Working knowledge of CAP, CPSA, organizational policies, procedures and guidelines
Master of Health Science or related degree
Member of CAP (Canadian Association of Pathologists)
