Reporting to the President, this Executive position will be responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of the combined NDT and ANI Business.
The CTO contributes to strategic business planning and ensures the organization’s technological growth while keeping up with industry and academic advancements in order to identify advanced technologies or markets.
Strategic thinking and strong business acumen are essential.
Job Duties :
Establish the technical vision for the Non-destructive Testing (NDT) and Analytical Instruments (ANI) businesses including how to implement and incorporate digital technologies such as Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Secure Cloud, Internet of Things, Wearables, and User Written Applications.
Act as the technical spokesperson for Olympus Scientific Solutions, Americas (OSSA) R&D in both internal and external venues.
Collaborate with Vertical Market Leaders (VMLs) and product managers to create and maintain a 5 year Technology and Product Roadmap based on knowledge of technology trends, competitive forces, market forces, and input from Business Development Managers (BDMs).
Maintain relationships with key technical contacts in Olympus Tokyo R&D and other Olympus Manufacturing Business Centers and Sales Business Centers for executing technology strategy.
Develop, deploy, and communicate R&D strategy for existing ANI and NDT product lines including the Technology Research Plan (TRP), the Technology Development Plan (TDP), and the Product Development Plan (PDP).
Maintain and update plans at least annually. Lead strategic meetings and provide advice to the President regarding ongoing PDP, TDP, and TRP efforts.
Create strategic plans and review operational plans geared toward ensuring quality control, management, and improvement of our products.
Ensure regular updates on the competition, constantly be on the lookout for new concepts and market trends in order to assess the potential impact on our business.
Maintain knowledge of the latest academic advancements that are relevant to NDT and ANI technical areas. Analyze market trends by setting up a market watch for opportunities and threats.
Seek out acquisition and partnership opportunities through technology scouting, literature reviews, personal contacts, conferences, industry meetings, and inter-
company and divisional contacts. Play a key leadership role in the due diligence of acquisition targets to enable OSSA to expand their markets.
Regularly visit current and potential customers in all vertical markets and ensure frequent follow-ups. Identify customer unmet needs and engage the appropriate departments to determine feasibility and timelines for implementation.
Jointly document user needs for all vertical markets with BDMs based on customer visits.
Supervise the Director of Core Technology (and his / her team) to create revolutionary concepts that address customers’ unmet needs and potentially could become new product lines.
Identify TRP, TDP, and PDP approaches and timelines for revolutionary systems. Hire and develop top talent for the Core Technology Group.
Provide professional technical expertise as needed.
Act as a senior leader by :

Collaborating closely with other departments and functions in order to maintain a high level of communication
Taking a proactive approach to problem solving by analyzing root causes and implementing both long and short-term solutions -

Use stakeholders’ feedback, produce analyses, reports, and make recommendations regarding the improvement of our product lines.
Take responsibility for intellectual property and actively analyze new ideas for patent disclosure.
Create and drive development of new patents and trade secrets.
Job Requirements :
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Proven experience as a CTO or similar role in academic research laboratory.
PhD in an Engineering or Science Field; Master's Degree accepted given appropriate experience.
Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in the analytic or scientific products industry or top level academic institution specifically in the field of Nuclear Physics, Ultrasonic Medical Imaging, Non-
destructive Testing (NDT) or in analytical instrumentation as a researcher, user, customer or developer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Knowledge of Digital Technology and a vision of how to incorporate it in NDT and ANI products.
Excellent understanding of relevant markets and customer needs in terms of products and features.
Knowledge of technological trends (academic and competitors) to build strategy.
Extremely broad technical background (ideally systems, hardware, FPGA and software).
Business acumen and strategy skills.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and influence stakeholders at all levels in the organization across multiple sites and in multiple countries.
Change management skills.
Demonstrated understanding of systems thinking and the ways to communicate systems design and technical concepts in a simple, straightforward way.
Ability to understand customer needs and be the voice of the customer in the product conception process. This will take into account both how products fit into the industry / market space and an understanding of customer needs so that the organization both "works on the right projects" and "does the right projects well".
Broad understanding of other functions (marketing, production, quality, service) so that our product and technology vision takes into account the entire life cycle of the product.
