    HERE’S WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER Reporting to the Manager, Victim Services, the Victim Support Worker is responsible for providing support to clients who have experienced violence and may or may not be involved in the justice system as a result of being the victim of abuse.

    This includes providing specialized services appropriate to the nature of the victimization of the client, as well as to the level of involvement with the criminal justice system.

    The Victim Support Worker will assist in the recovery of clients by lessening the impact of crime and trauma, ensuring survivors are effectively supported through the justice process, assisting in the creation of safety plans, and helping survivors cope with the effects of the crimes committed against them.

    Support will also be provided to non-offending family members and friends who are close to the immediate victim. WHAT YOU BRING Education, Training, Experience

  • BSW or relevant BA plus two years related work experience.
  • Experience and familiarity with the justice system and social services

  • Knowledge of dynamics of violence in intimate relationships, sexual assault, criminal harassment and sexual / physical abuse in childhood.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, community-based and feminist approaches to intervening in violence against women, taking into account the intersectionality of persons marginalized on the basis of gender, race / ethnicity, economic status, language, culture, age, ability, sexual or gender identity.
  • Knowledge of Provincial Policy on Violence Against Women in Relationships.
  • Understanding of the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and support skills.
  • Knowledge of Crime Victim Assistance Program.
  • Work well under pressure. Able to balance relationship with key stakeholders with competing priorities.
  • Superior relationship and trust building abilities when dealing with resistant clients.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality while under pressure to disclose information.
  • Superior knowledge of criminal justice, and police system, including bail conditions investigation proceedings, protective custody, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with justice system personnel and other victim service and community programs.
  • Understanding of cross-cultural and equity issues.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Second language is an asset.
  • Additional Requirements :

  • Successful completion of enhanced police security clearance and background check
  • Possess valid BC driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle
  • YOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Emotional Support and Crisis Response Work with police files deemed highest risk due to risk associated with the offender, and the vulnerability of the victim.
  • Build rapport with marginalized victims who may be resistant to service and police involvement. Complete personal risk assessments and safety planning for high degree of outreach work.

    Locate marginalized victims who may not have access to transportation in order to provide outreach services. This may include coordinating with police detective for safety in cases with a high risk offender.

    Maintain client confidentiality, while effectively discerning what information needs to be shared with police partner in order to promote safety.

    Provide short-term emotional support specific to victims’ unique concerns and needs. Provide crisis response service during regular program hours.

    Provide support to victims throughout their participation in the criminal justice process. Promote and support victims’ needs and rights in the justice system and in the community.

    Provide risk assessments and safety planning information for high risk cases in order to help victims stay safe. Facilitate accompaniment and / or transportation to police, Crown counsel, court, community services or hospital in cases of serious crime and / or where victims are particularly vulnerable.

  • Criminal Justice System Support Provide case specific information and general information about the justice system and the Victims of Crime Act.
  • Provide information on criminal justice system principles / functions and process, definition of arrest rights of the accused, investigation status, roles of criminal justice system representatives, levels of court / court procedures, updates on court case progress, court orders / probation / post-sentencing, dynamics of abuse, etc.

    Assist victims in completing forms such as Crime Victim Assistance applications and victim impact statements. Provide victims with information about criminal court process and specific court result information as the case proceeds through the criminal justice process.

    Provide witness orientation and act as liaison with Crown counsel. Provide other court-related support as needed such as debriefing reactions to case outcomes.

    Inform client of alternative justice options, explain provincial and federal corrections systems and the role of parole boards.

    Inform clients of their rights to access information on the status of the offender’s sentence. Access and provide information about the corrections system regarding offender applying for parole.

    Provide assistance with verbal communications, written submissions and / or in-person attendance at the parole hearing; prepare clients for eventual release of the offender.

  • Referrals and Community Liaising Work embedded within a specialized police unit in a collaborative partnership model. Effectively manage relationship with the police unit, clients, and criminal justice system.
  • Refer client to appropriate resources when needed, such as counselling resources, job training, legal aid, medical services, as well as local, provincial and community-based resources for victims of crime.

    Advocate with legal and social service agencies, as well as the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and other services as appropriate and needed.

    Maintain contact and network with other service providers as appropriate around specific cases and / or general issues, liaise and share general and specific information with other Victim Service programs.

    Participate on the Victim Services Coordinating Committee as required; sit on community committees as appropriate. Provide education programs on issues of criminal victimization, victim services and prevention.

    Participate in community coordination through various community and justice system coordination committees.

  • Program Administration Meet administrative expectations of agency and program, including file and record-keeping, data collection and submission of statistics.
  • Participate in individual and team supervision as required. Examine one’s work from an understanding of a power analysis.
