Under direction, performs assigned maintenance and construction duties throughout the hospital facilities, according to policies, procedures, legislated codes and regulations, to support a functional, reliable, safe and comfortable health care environment.

Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy.

As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.


  • Performs duties consistent with those of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic under the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act and as pertains to a hospital environment.
  • Maintains and repairs building systems assigned, such as : heating, ventilation, air conditioning, chilled water and automated building systems roof top units, self
  • contained units

  • Maintains and repairs hospital equipment as assigned such as : refrigerant piping, compressors, chillers, valves, ice machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, food retherm system, kitchen equipment and related controls. Crib misters.
  • Plans, prepares layouts, reports material and technical needs for own work assignments.
  • Submits for approval, estimates of materials, labor, feasibility of repairs or projects and purchase requests.
  • Interfaces with management and staff throughout the hospital, contractors and suppliers to expedite the resolution and follow-up of facility needs.
  • Performs minor project work, renovations, equipment installation and testing, as required.
  • Participates in the preventive maintenance programs, work schedules and maintains records as required.
  • Assists other personnel as required or may be called on to do other duties as required by the Maintenance Department. Responds to emergency call-ins, stand-by shift rotation and overtime as required.

  • Grade 12 diploma (Technical program)
  • Current Ontario Certificate of Qualification as Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic and Ozone Depletion card
  • 5 year apprenticeship program 2 year educational component.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of complex building systems and equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate trouble shooting and interpersonal skills.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check required
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly
