POSITION OVERVIEW :
Under the general guidance and direction of the Environmental Technolgist, Restoration Projects, the Weekend Site Attendant and Nature Interpreter, Tommy Thompson Park works alone at Tommy Thompson Park on weekends and holidays and is responsible for enforcing park rules, policies and regulations, maintaining public safety, and providing nature interpretation to park visitors.
Overall, this position contributes to the Strategic Plan objectives of healthy rivers and shorelines and greenspace and biodiversity an supports the strategic plan priorities of foster sustainable citizenship, tell the story of the Toronto Region, and rethink greenspace to maximize its value.
Conduct morning and afternoon patrols through the park to identify any major hazards, incidents and issues.
Enforce park rules : no motorized vehicles, no dogs, no removal of plants or shoreline materials, no drones, etc.
Provide first aid when required. Complete injury and incident reports. Facilitate EMS access to the park.
Provide regular updates via Teams to park managers.
Maintain Nature Centre in neat and tidy condition.
Answer visitor questions and address visitor complaints.
Assist with creation of interpretive displays and activities.
Engage with park visitors in the Nature Centre and provide interpretation on Tommy Thompson Park, habitats, flora and fauna.
Working towards degree or diploma from a university or college program in the field of biology, environmental studies or related discipline;
or equivalent knowledge.
Ontario G class driver’s licence.
First Aid and CPR.
Previous experience in public engagement or public education.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge of the ecology and flora / fauna of the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario.
Familiarity with Tommy Thompson Park programs and projects.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Good conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently without supervision.
Ability to convey ecological knowledge to a general audience.
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
