The Role

The Muir Theatre provides technical support to various programs within Douglas College. This involves working with production teams, performers and participants to realize projects as well as share and develop skills and training with people we are engaging with.

The Student Assistant Stage Technician will work with the staff technicians on various productions assisting where required.

Working closely with Muir Theatre users, stage management and the other technical departments ensuring the effective, safe and smooth running of the productions.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with load ins / outs for productions and events in the theatre spaces and other areas on campus.-Setting up seating and stage equipment for performances, rehearsals or events -
  • Maintaining a safe and tidy environment within the department and the building, including keeping the stage clean and maintained as appropriate to the surface and design.

  • To ensure that the fabric and equipment within the building is adequately protected for all load outs / load ins and that ancillary areas such as halls, classrooms, shops, support rooms and the outside of the building are left in a fit and proper state -
  • Finding innovative ways to realize the creative ambitions of productions and other projects -To be aware of, and comply with, rules and legislation pertaining to Health and Safety at work and to abide by the procedures as set out in the Health and Safety policies.

  • To take part in training, learning and sharing knowledge. -Any other duties as reasonably directed by the Technical Director, Staff Technicians or SET department faculty.
  • To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • To be able to operate stage machinery, counterweight riggings, lighting, audio and effects systems. -An ability and willingness to work well with a wide range of freelance and casual technicians with all levels of experience-
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, as required by the post, including evenings, overnight and weekends -Excellent communication skills

    Domestic students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant / Student Research Assistant :

    1. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR

    2. The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR

    3. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-

    secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term

    International students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant / Student Research Assistant : 1.

    The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year; OR

    2. The international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-

    secondary institution in B.C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W).

    Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria. Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

    An original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College.

    Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.
