HR Director, Labour Relations
The HR Director, Labour Relations is a member of the senior management team and a key advisor to the organization. Working in partnership with our respective operational leadership teams, HR Directors, and other organizational leaders, the Director is responsible for developing and implementing labour relations management strategies for the organization that align with our Strategic Plan.
The Director is also responsible for providing expertise and strategic advice on positive employee relations initiatives, results-
oriented labour relations practices, as well as labour relations policies and procedures. This role requires a high level of interaction with our operational leadership and Union representatives, and the ability to work collaboratively to resolve complex and challenging labour relations issues in a fast paced and high intensity environment.
Key Responsibilities :
Develop and implement labour relations strategies and practices across the organization.
Develop strategic and informed negotiating mandates for approval by operational and corporate leaders.
Provide leadership for organization in collective bargaining and labour negotiations.
Provide leadership and advice for HR Business Partners, and operational leaders, on the grievance and arbitration process
Provide leadership and advice for HR Business Partners, and operational leaders, on interpretation and management under collective agreements.
Provide leadership and advice to managers and employees on labour and employee relations issues, practices and legal requirements as needed.
Provide leadership around documentation for matters related to employee discipline and appeals, grievances and harassment investigations.
Provide sound and effective leadership, coaching and mentorship to senior management team members to ensure continued development and delivery of effective labour relations.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with provincial and local union leadership, relevant government and regulatory bodies, and external labour / legal counsel.
Collaborate with various organizational stakeholders on development of employment policies and practices that reflect the company’s culture and operating philosophies.
Remain current with provincial and federal employment legislation, and benefit legislation.
Remain current and knowledgeable about operational and personnel rules that govern long term care and retirement living workplaces.
Key Requirements & Competencies :
Undergraduate degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations, Industrial Relations, or a law degree (LLB or JD).
A minimum of 10 years experience working in Labour Relations, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a position responsible for labour relations strategy.
Prior experience in human resources in a health care environment is an asset.
Prior experience in labour negotiations and demonstrated ability to negotiate matters to resolution.
Travel within NS, NB and Ontario will be required
Ability to maintain effective and positive relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization.
Ability to develop and foster teamwork and motivate a group.
Ability to successfully lead others and to hold self and others accountable for achieving labour relations mandates and initiatives aligned with organizational goals
Ability to understand and appreciate different and opposing perspectives, to adapt own approach to changing situations and to change or easily accept changes in own organization or job requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently, both verbally and in writing, and to articulate information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and the nature of the information.
