What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Facility Maintenance (or designate) and within established policies, procedures and guidelines to provide welding and fabrication services as required for construction, repair and maintenance projects.
Builds, maintains, alters and repairs a variety metal structures such as stairs, hand rails, safety railings, protective barriers, gates, fences, NPC equipment and custom ornamental metal work.
Provides installation and maintenance of structural metal systems and support items
Performs structural and partition metalwork systems in accordance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and Ontario Fire Code (OFC).
Lays out, positions and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, and calipers.
Welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding related equipment.
Performs all cutting and welding (oxy-acetylene, electrical, tig, mig) for projects involving steel, cast iron, aluminum or stainless steel : fabricating and welding plates and metal as required.
Cuts and shapes work pieces, using powered saws, metal band saws, steel lathes, hand or hydraulic shears and presses.
Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
Performs hot work activities in accordance with NPC policies and procedures (e.g. communicating activation and deactivation of alarms and fire suppression systems).
Protects staff and visitors from welding flash / arc work through the use of various protective measures (e.g. visual screening, barricades, road closures etc.).
Develops templates (jigs) and other work aids to hold and align parts.
Repairs, replaces, modifies or duplicates parts for NPC machinery and equipment (e.g. snowplows, mowing equipment etc.)
Erects, repairs and removes light displays in support of the Winter Festival of Lights event program.
Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and other precision measuring instruments.
Interprets, reads blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine details, specifications and to calculate the materials required to complete tasks.
Determines required equipment and welding method applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
Safely operates elevated work platforms (EWPs) and fork lifts.
Responds to welding and fabrication related request for service (work orders), determines cause and takes and / or recommends appropriate action for repair, as required.
Performs tasks that may be physically demanding; requiring frequent and recurring bending and lifting, and to hold / position materials.
Maintains clear, concise and accurate daily work records including but not limited to request for service reports, daily work sheets, and time sheets.
Sources and orders materials from suppliers, as required.
Operates the shop vehicles, delivering and picking up materials as required.
Reports broken, lost or defective tools or equipment to supervisor.
Complies with all applicable legislation as well as any related policies and procedures including safety procedures and the maintenance of clean work areas.
Repairs park benches, tables and chairs as required.
Works cooperatively and acts as mentors to other NPC employees, apprentices and students
Successful completion of the Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) for a Welder / Fitter.
Working knowledge of tools, equipment, methods, practices and procedures of the welding and fabrication trades.
Valid Class G Driver's License.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Three (3) years of related experience following certification, with one (1) year on the job.
Ability to work from plans and drawings, written and verbal instructions; ability to carryout manual tasks.
