The Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) unit of the Employee Services Department is responsible for leading the advancement of inclusion at the City of Edmonton.

Reporting to the D&I Lead, the D&I Consultant - Equity Specialist works in collaboration to lead and support initiatives / programs relevant to the Pillars identified in The Art of Inclusion : Our Diversity & Inclusion Framework and other priorities as identified by the Executive Leadership Team and City Council.

In particular, the Equity Specialist is responsible for initiatives and education relating to Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+), respectful workplace, employee resource networks and providing education, support, advice and analysis to the corporation on equity-related matters.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will :

  • Collaborate with and guide internal stakeholders including department D&I Committees, Employee Resource Networks and GBA+ Centres of Excellence and Communities of Practice
  • Support ongoing consulting, training, implementation and evaluation of GBA+ as the City’s process of inclusion
  • Consult and advise on strategic and operational diversity, inclusion, and equity matters
  • Collaborate toward eliminating forms of inequality by identifying and working to implement systems, structures, policies and practices, and influence attitudes supporting equity for individuals experiencing marginalization in the workplace
  • Contribute to workforce equity analysis, monitor data, plan and develop recommendations, programs and / or initiatives
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and research on best practices relating to equity, diversity and inclusion, support related communications
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships internally and externally and attend community meetings / events to advance knowledge and to position the City of Edmonton as a leader in Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Actively represent the unit and the City as a trusted ambassador


  • A university degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Human Resources, Adult Education or a related field. A graduate degree is considered an asset
  • CCIP (Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional) certification an asset
  • 5 years experience in equity, diversity & inclusion (EDI) with strong competencies in and knowledge of EDI practices, principles and initiatives is a requirement
  • Lived experience and / or working understanding and direct experience with values and experiences of diverse and marginalized communities is a requirement
  • Demonstrated expertise in the intersectionality of various forms of power and oppression in the workplace and society is a requirement
  • Experience and comfort in designing and facilitating learning sessions and / or public speaking is a requirement
  • Familiarity with GBA+ and / or other inclusion lens / tools
  • Demonstrated expertise in anti-racism and implicit bias is an asset
  • Experience in consulting, developing and implementing strategies to achieve organizational and operational change is an asset
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial human rights and employment policy and legislation relevant to the City’s diversity and inclusion pillars and objectives
  • Experience with equity data analyses (e.g. diversity demographic analyses) is an asset
  • Personal leadership in diversity and inclusion by actively demonstrating the values and behaviours supportive of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop positive, strong relationships and work in a collaborative, integrated team environment.
  • Ability to achieve results in a respectful and inclusive style

  • Demonstrated success leading a project with cross-department stakeholders is an asset
