The institution is comprised of St. Michael's Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare.

The Technical Specialist position is a lead position within the division of Molecular Diagnostics. The lead position is required to oversee and maintain smooth operation of the division under the supervision of the Director of Molecular Diagnostics and the Pathology Manager.

All specified below requirements pertain to Covid testing platforms and activities

DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES :

  • Provides technical expertise in the Molecular diagnostics area of the laboratory and acts as a technical resource person for staff
  • Receives technical direction from the Director of Molecular Diagnostics and direct supervision is received from the Pathology Manager.
  • Assists and supports the Manager and Director in the smooth running of the day-to-day operations of the laboratory including
  • Prioritizes and monitors workload and workflow to ensure timely reporting of STAT and routine results
  • Investigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventative actions
  • Demonstrates commitment to continued advanced education in Molecular diagnostic modalities
  • Maintains professional working relationship with employees, pathologists, physicians and outside contacts and serves as the liaison between staff and management
  • Responsible for the provision of quality management, by ensuring and verifying that Quality Control and IQMH standards are met
  • Responsible for equipment operation, maintenance and repair; ensuring that all equipment preventive maintenance is performed and documented
  • Supports evaluation and validation of new instrumentation and methodologies and is responsible for the implementation once selected
  • Provides teaching and technical direction to technologists, residents, and all applicable staff
  • Performs troubleshooting for equipment malfunctions, non-conforming quality control, and anomalous test results
  • Participates in the development of policies, processes, and procedures using guidelines established by IQMH and other applicable regulatory bodies
  • Collects and analyzes data to prepare various reports as required
  • Assists the Manager in staff schedules to provide coverage for routine bench rotational shifts, weekends, on-call and vacation
  • Prepares Molecular area for accreditation inspections, including IQMH
  • Participates in technical research and development activities and in-house continuing education
  • Close interactions / collaboration with TS Molecular is required
  • Performs other duties as required
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Must be currently registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
  • Must have minimum 4 years recent experience in Molecular biology
  • Must be proficient and demonstrate expertise in the area of Molecular biology
  • Advanced Registered Technologist certification or equivalent preferred
  • Bachelor’s of Science degree preferred
  • Must have experience in quality principles and teaching
  • Experience in research / development are an asset
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to continuing education
  • Must be able to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, communication and writing skills
  • Must demonstrate competence in problem-solving and decision-making
  • Must be a team player able to work cooperatively with other team members
  • Must be committed to the Hospital's mission and values
  • Must have an excellent attendance record
  • HOURS OF WORK : Must be willing and able to work all shifts on days, evening, nights, weekends and statutory holidays.
