Position Summary

Midwives employed by the IWK Health Centre are respected members of the maternity care team with excellent communication and relationships with nurses, family physicians, obstetricians and health care providers within the IWK Health Centre and the community setting.

Midwifery care is woman and family centered in keeping with the philosophy of the profession of Midwifery, the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics set out by the MRCNS, and the IWK Model of Midwifery Practice.

The Midwife provides individualized primary maternity care with women and their families from conception, through pregnancy, labour, birth and the six week postpartum period.

This individualized care may be offered a variety of settings including the client's home, community clinics, and IWK. The Midwife facilitates continuity of access to care beyond the childbearing year, when necessary, through communication with other care providers or services.

The Midwife offers a continuum of midwifery care that is inclusive, culturally competent and celebrates the richness of the increasing diverse communities served.

Particular emphasis is placed on priority populations who historically have been underserved and marginalized.
