Are you an experienced food service professional? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre where you will prepare, cook and assemble standard and special diet meals in a conventional institutional kitchen.Please note :

  • This positions are on-call 0 to 40 hours per week with no guaranteed minimum amount of hours (they are 12 months in duration with possibility of extension)
  • The Thunder Bay Correctional Centre is located at : 2351 Highway 61 South, Thunder Bay (Please click on address link for a map of where the jail is located)
  • These positions require working with and providing direction to inmate helpers (and will be eligible for an Custodial Responsibility Allowance)What can I expect to do in this role?In this role you will :
  • Provide team leadership within the cooking operation for the correctional institution
  • Provide direction and support to inmate helpers
  • Prepare and assemble meals
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies
  • Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff and equipment
  • Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen areaHow do I qualify?Mandatory
  • Possession of a Food Handler Certificate recognized by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and / or demonstrated equivalent level of knowledge and experience in volume cooking
  • Current First Aid and Heartsaver Certificates (or ability to obtain)
  • Ability to work shift work, weekends, and holidaysFood Services Knowledge and Skills
  • You have knowledge of general and volume cooking / baking methods and procedures
  • You have experience with food preparation and storage procedures / methods
  • You have knowledge of portion control standards
  • You have experience preparing a variety of foods and restricted diets
  • You know food safety practices and proper use of kitchen equipment
  • You understand and can apply health and safety practices and standards (such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, Public Health Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Sanitation Code for Canada's Food Industry, etc.)
  • You are able to maintain the safety and security of the kitchenTeam Leadership and Communication Skills
  • You can provide instruction to inmate helpers
  • You have demonstrated tact and diplomacy to work with ministry staff, inmate helpers, and service providers to address issues
  • You have written communication skills to prepare various reports
  • You have analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, assess, and resolve workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions, and food service issuesNOTEThis is a continuous posting.
