Backwoods Energy Services is seeking an experienced Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic to work on a full-time basis from our shop in Edson, Alberta.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assisting in supervision of the maintenance program.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance and servicing of all equipment at shop and in field.
  • Knowledge of operation of excavators, front end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, and other pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Mobilization of equipment for maintenance and repair.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing of mechanical issues and inspection of equipment to detect faults and malfunctions; travel to job sites to repair equipment as required
  • Analytical decision making and problem-solving skills to determine extent of repairs.
  • Testing of repaired equipment to evaluate proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturer specifications.
  • Tracking of parts and filters needed
  • Making all trucks and equipment heading out to work is in safe operating order
  • All safety paperwork needed from the company
  • Inspection paperwork for services and repairs
  • Mentor apprentices working for Backwoods; and
  • Additional and alternative duties that may be changed from time-to-time by the Employer.


what we're looking for:

  • Valid Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic/Technician Certificate.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Possess excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills and abilities.
  • Experience with mechanical repairs and maintenance on all types of heavy-duty equipment, experience with light duty vehicles would be an asset.
  • Ability to read and write to keep daily records including maintenance reports and work order documentation, basic knowledge of computer applications.

  • Maintenance schedule in place and adhered to for all equipment
  • Field repair calls addressed promptly with minimal time lost for operations
  • Daily maintenance records, work order documentation, safety compliance documentation are consistently correct and up-to-date
  • Leadership of apprentices and sharing of industry and trade specific knowledge is constant and ongoing
  • Implements best-in-class fleet management processes
  • Downtime as well as cost & frequency between breakdown events
