What is the opportunity?
This role will join RBC Insurance’s Investment team helping to plan portfolio management strategies around assets backing reserves and capital.
This includes oversight and management of investment returns, capital ratio and market related risk exposures. The Investment Strategy team also works closely with insurance’s product owners to support business growth and RBC enterprise objectives.
A successful candidate will need to manage stakeholders in areas of actuarial valuation, financial reporting and capital markets, while staying abreast of regulations, best practices and industry standards related to insurance portfolio management.
What will you do?
Support financial reporting of investment income and reserve movement due to market changes
Monitor and manage internal risk metrics related to market and investment risk including development of new metrics and reports as needed along with supporting control activities
Reviewing, testing and execution (documentation and approval) of new investment strategies developed internally or through collaboration with partners such as RBC Capital markets
Identifying optimal asset mixes to support various insurance products
Support implementation of IFRS 17 standards with focus on impact to company income and capital affected by asset liability management and discounting of liability cashflows
Development and implementation of new systems and tools within Investments to support portfolio management activities
What will you need to be succesful?
Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance or Accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience
5+ years of experience within an actuarial or finance role ideally with a focus on asset management or capital markets
Strong technical and analytical skills such as excel modeling and / or coding (for example visual basic) including ability to automate tasks and build tools
Ability to articulate operational needs related to asset / portfolio management and discounting of insurance obligations
Ability to collaborate across different departments or business functions such as Finance and Risk Management, with strong research and writing skills
Highly motivated self-starter with agile and creative problem solving ability who can work effectively independently
FCIA designation and at least 5-10 years of hands-on actuarial experience including AXIS or other actuarial modeling techniques
Understanding of actuarial standards, insurance business operations, products and relationship to market conditions
Comfort with researching and modeling different types of assets or capital markets instruments including derivatives, special purpose vehicles and fair value pricing concepts
Understanding of IFRS standards and requirements for discounting of insurance liability cash flows and asset portfolio management
Ability to work within larger teams and impact and influence cross functional resources
