Position Purpose Summary :
To prepare and oversee food program providing nutritious meals for everyone. Organizing and training of volunteers to help prepare and provide meals to all people.
Oversight of the Sally Ann Supper Meal program served seven days a week, 365 days a year
Ensure adequate stock on hand for food preparation for the meal program
Ensure appropriate volunteer coverage to assist staff in food preparation and serving
Collect food donations from various registered kitchens etc. banquet centers, health unit, restaurants etc. and ensure a good relationship is maintained
Responsible for menu for meal program
Prepare and serve nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations
Maintains a high level of cleanliness at all times within the kitchen and storage areas
Adapt work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
Supervise students and volunteers with duties
Adhere to budget for food purchases
Purchase the food needed for meals
Seek preferred pricing for supplies needed
Maintains Safety SDS book and Health Disease book
Maintains Emergency Disaster equipment and supplies
Logs stats for meal program on computer (number of adults, children and meals provided)
Coordinates food handler courses with the health unit every two years for staff and volunteers
Develops volunteer schedule for meal program & the Community Garden program
Keeps policy and procedures up to date
Arranges and holds bimonthly meeting for kitchen volunteers
Provide spiritual support & guidance; using opportunities to pray and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clients, families and volunteers
Assist as required with Emergency & Disaster Services (EDS) tasks such as volunteer recruitment and orientation, event coordination and participation
Organize and hold volunteer appreciation events for all volunteers from all departments. This includes preparing the menu and food
Attend training events organized by the Salvation Army, Provincial and local administration agencies to keep abreast of current trends
Backfill any meal program staff, or volunteer positions left vacant from a call in
Responsible for coordinating pickups of vegetables donated by local farmers, gardeners together with participating local agencies i.
e. United Way, Community Living and Community Development who participate in planting gardens solely for the Salvation Army
Responsible for documenting quantities of vegetables received and their value
Responsible for purchasing, writing and delivering thank you cards to various participators; and ensuring a good relationship is maintained.
Responsible for maintaining, processing and rotating vegetables in deep freezers in accordance with the Canadian Health Unit standards
Community Garden Coordinator
Build relationships with local businesses and solicit donations of soil, seeds, and other necessary supplies
Meet with various agencies to network with them to acquire support / donation of garden beds
Ensure maintenance of Garden Equipment and supplies is completed
Prepare garden soil for planting and plant crops in rotation to promote maximum harvest yield
Maintain weather conditions charts
Maintain proper moisture in the gardens
Maintain growth and plan chart
Weeding and caring for the gardens
Harvest over five months
Clean up the gardens
Make sure all produce from the gardens is processed and used for the various meal programs
Train and mentor, and supervise volunteers to assist with the garden work
Culinary Certificate or Diploma required
Minimum 2 years prior experience, including 1-year experience in supervisions and budgeting
Food Handlers’ certificate
Knowledge of Canada Food Guide
Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision
Ability to give instructions and coordinate volunteers
Ability to represent The Salvation Army in a positive and pleasant manner
Valid Driver’s License
Willing to pray with clients, volunteers and staff and say grace every day before meals are served.
Must be able to affirm and support the mission and values of The Salvation Army
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring :
A clear vulnerable sector screening
A clean drivers abstract
Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
HOURS : 40 hours per week. Monday to Friday 10 : 00am to 6 : 00pm (flexibility required)
