ABOUT KENSINGTON GARDENS

Kensington Gardens is a 350-bed, not-for-profit, long-term care facility that offers a multicultural approach to care in a home-

like setting. We support each resident’s right to dignity, self-esteem and independence. Residents desire autonomy and control over the everyday matters in their lives, and thrive when they are given even the smallest challenges.

TITLE : Friendly Visitor

PURPOSE : To provide social support and interact to a resident, by regularly enjoying a one-to-one visit.

WHO TO REPORT TO :

When visiting on the floor : Registered Nurse on duty

For scheduling, follow up or questions : Coordinator of Volunteer Services

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Visit one-to-one with residents (in assigned area) at least one time a week

Share interests and hobbies with resident through discussion and activities

Read aloud, write letters, play games, etc.; depending on the resident’s interest

Accompany resident, if interested, to lobby and outside sitting area

Follow Policies and Procedures as outlined

Report any significant changes or concerns

REQUIREMENTS :

Complete Volunteer Orientation program

Complete mandatory documentation

Sociable and friendly, good communication skills both verbal and nonverbal

Patience and understanding

Additional language an asset

Attend additional training that is applicable to position.

TIME & DAY : Weekly for 2 hours. Flexible times, but no later than 8 : 00 P.M.

COMMITMENT : 6 months, 2 hours / week

SCREENING, ORIENTATION, & TRAINING REQUIRMENTS

1.Have a brief interview to determine eligibility for this volunteer position.

2.Complete a Vulnerable Sector Screening Police Reference Check.

3. A 2-step TB test (Tuberculosis).

4. Two (2) professional references

5. Attend a volunteer orientation, complete online training, complete addition training as required, sign off on our confidentiality agreement and orientation checklist, etc.

TIME & DAY : Weekly for 2 hours. Flexible times, but no later than 8 : 00 P.M.

Building is wheelchair accessible

Volunteers will be reimbursed for TTC tokens after volunteering a minimum of 50 hours
