Position Summary

We are hiring a Part-Time Registered Practical Nurse to join our Addiction Medicine Service for the Homewood Health Centre in Guelph and are looking for you.

Hours of work : this is a Part-Time position

What you'll be doing

  • The RPN provides care to stable patients recovering from a variety of addictions within a
  • therapeutic milieu environment.

  • As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the RPN supports the principles of the
  • Addiction program.

  • The AMS programs are delivered primarily through a group model.
  • Ability to prioritize and to function effectively in a large, demanding environment under
  • the supervision of the Charge Nurse is essential.

  • Providing nursing care on units across Addiction Medicine Services as required;
  • Contributing to stable patient care needs according to CNO standards, RPNAO Best
  • Practice Guidelines, specific program philosophy and diversified patient populations;
  • Receiving patient assignments and following care plans accordingly
  • Engaging with interdisciplinary teams and individual team members as appropriate
  • Participating in clinical discussions and team meetings, patient / family conferences
  • Accepting changing work assignments across Addiction Medicine Services as required
  • and directed by supervisor and / or delegate

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation and reports
  • Strong ability to problem-solve for stable patients
  • Solid understanding of the stable addicted patient population, treatments and
  • medications

  • Strong inter-personal skills and respectful communication style with patients, families
  • and staff.

  • Applied understanding of principles of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Assess and prevent suicide and manage aggressive behaviour through non-violent crisis
  • intervention techniques

  • Ensures necessary clinical assessments are initiated following admission and at various
  • other times

  • Experience with group facilitation an asset
  • Proficient computer skills and experience with working with a number of systems and
  • What we're looking for

  • Licensed as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Up to 6 months of experience in general nursing practice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Homewood’s values (Service Excellence, Innovation,

  • Evidence of good work and attendance record.
  • Ability to effectively manage crisis situations and deal with acutely ill patients.
  • comfortable with leading groups
  • excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Current knowledge and experience of assessment and treatment of psychiatric
  • disorders, including prevention of suicide and management of aggressive behaviour.

  • Proven ability and skill in working independently and with a team.
  • Commitment to working within Homewood’s Health and Safety Standards.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act (MHA).
  • Previous training in boundaries, suicide awareness, and medication administration is an
  • asset.

  • Knowledge of CBT / DBT is an asset.
