This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal based in Engineering Microcomputing Facilities in the Faculty of Engineering.
Position Summary : Provide for the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of information systems policies and programs required to maximize unit effectiveness, respond to the needs of students and staff, and support the University's mission of teaching and research.
Provide services related to business application, infrastructure and operations, customer support, information security including instructional development, help desk support for students, staff, faculty and the delivery of Information Technology (IT) training workshops for the University community.
Develop and implement information system strategies that support the needs of the University. Integrate information systems strategy and policy with the unit planning process.
Primary Responsibilities : Sorts out infrastructure of underlying systems.Designs automation in updating systems, configuration and customization of programs, writing of codes.
Maintains server and desktop operating systems and software across the faculty. This includes : Ensuring systems are up-to-date and secure, Interacting with end users (administrative & teaching related) to trouble shoot problems and identify potential problems or future needs, Maintaining the backup system and validating data integrity, Supervising casual employees who often assist with both routine tasks as well assigning tasks for special projects and Transfer of knowledge, training, etc.
to other IT staff and end users is often required, especially when a new system is implemented.The size, complexity and diversity of needs within the faculty and the high ratio of supported users to IT support staff necessitates the ability to leverage tools and techniques like SCCM, GPOs, AD groups, etc.
to manage systems and deploy software and updates.Proper analysis and planning of these tools and ensures that such activities do not significantly impact other functions in the faculty.
In addition, systems need to be monitored to ensure that they adhere to standards or meet expectations. In the event that they don’t, the problem needs to be identified, addressed and reported.
Proper documentation of systems and changes is also required.Development of Disk images / configurations for both faculty administrative office and teaching desktop / workstations.
Includes evaluation of new techniques, operating systems and software and recommending changes that benefit the faculty.
Often includes the planning and implementation where applicable. Also involves the customization of systems to meet the needs of our environment and to ensure the integrity and security of data.
Coordinates with other departments on joint projects and to maintain / troubleshoot common, shared systems. E.g. license & file servers - Undertakes special projects (i.
e. migration from windows to virtualized environment)Other Qualifying Skills and / or AbilitiesUndergraduate degree (preferably in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Management Information Systems) with three years' related experience.
Experience with building and supporting solutions on Windows Server or later. Experience with Vmware Vsphere, Linux and / or MAC OSX considered an asset.
Experience with managing Active Directory, System Center Configuration Manager and Group Policies. Strong analytical skills and the ability to take a proactive approach to problem solving.
