Job Description

Provide mechanical or electrical rail vehicle engineering services to SNC-Lavalin clients with subject matter expertise in :

  • Procurement engineering support of new or overhauled rail vehicles.
  • Engineering support for all rolling stock systems and subsystems on a variety of assignments.
  • Engineering support for the development of technical specifications for rail vehicles and their subsystems, including requirements for testing, maintenance, training and overhaul.
  • Technical reviews of vehicle and subsystem designs for transit and railway fleets by analyzing technical requirements, verifying conformance and preparing appropriate review comments.
  • Performance and specification compliance with respect to contractual documents, FRA, APTA, Transport Canada, EN and other applicable standards and regulations.
  • Oversight and witnessing of design documentation, analysis and testing.
  • System integration of rail vehicles and their subsystems for compatibility and functional performance, including components and systems from suppliers.
  • Identifying and resolving key safety risks in all relevant projects.
  • Key Outputs :

  • Conducting thorough and in depth design reviews and technical assessments.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations and reports
  • Preparing technical minutes of meetings
  • Timely completion of time booking and expense submittal
  • Maintaining professional confidentiality relating to client information
  • Maintaining professional expertise by participating in approved Continuing Professional Development programs
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Providing high quality rail vehicle & systems engineering and project support on multiple projects focused on either mechanical or electrical systems.
  • Providing professional level of service at all points of contact with the client, including email, phone, video conference and face to face meetings.
  • Delivering output in line with the quality standards of SNC-Lavalin.
  • Achieving on-time task deliverables.
  • Building organizational knowledge of rail system technology, regulations, requirements, and guidelines.
  • Supporting business development and technical contributions to proposals, as required.
  • Pursuing professional development in industry areas and technical knowledge.
  • Supporting the training and development of junior technical staff.
  • Following applicable business policies and protocols including those of our clients, where necessary.
  • Ensuring all work is undertaken in accordance with SNC-Lavalin’s procedures, including quality procedures and safety management system.
  • Working well in a team environment where team members may not necessarily be co-located.
  • Computer literacy to a professional standard in relation to word processing and spreadsheets, including competency in databases and project management tools.
  • Qualifications :

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and / or ability required.

    Education and / or Equivalent Experience :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering, plus seven (7) to ten (10) years relevant experience required.
  • Relevant experience includes : Rolling stock design and / or manufacturing, including experience with the vehicle fleet procurement process.
  • Experience working with rail vehicle manufacturers in areas of mechanical or electrical vehicle systems as a design or production engineer, including machine design, structural design, welding metallurgy, manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing.

    Direct experience with the design and manufacturing of rail vehicle and / or locomotive systems or components, including systems such as carbody, trucks, brakes, propulsion, electrical control systems, communications, HVAC, monitoring systems, power supply, signaling, etc.

    Experience performing detailed calculations and analyses relative to field of expertise is considered an asset (e.g., classical stress analysis, linear and non-

    linear Finite Analysis, vibration analysis, thermal analysis, CFD, etc.).Experience in the fields of systems or RAMS engineering is considered an asset.

    Knowledge of North American industrial standards and codes, including, ASTM, ASME, ANSI, AWS, MIL, NFPA, EPA, IEEE, etc.Knowledge of North American rail vehicle regulations and standards, including FRA, FTA, Transport Canada, and APTA.

    Knowledge of international rail vehicle standards is considered an asset, including EN, UIC and DIN standards.Familiarity with key market suppliers for rail vehicles and various subsystems and experience performing detailed design product reviews and reports.

    Demonstrated experience with developing junior staff through mentoring, training and work-shadowing is considered an asset.

    Professional Engineering status (or equivalent).

    Language Skills :

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English required
