Working in collaboration with colleagues on the Alumni Relations team, the Communications Specialist will create and implement communications programs and plans that build engagement with Western’s alumni.

The incumbent seeks to keep alumni informed regarding Western and fellow alumni successes and the ways in which alumni can remain connected and engaged with Western and with each other.

The Communications Specialist will also increase awareness of the benefits and services available to Western’s alumni. The primary focus of the role is on the planning and development of mass communication materials, including news and feature articles, annual alumni magazine articles, newsletters, brochures, alumni website material, advertisements, social media and project communications plans.

Education :

  • Undergraduate Degree (preferably in Communications, Marketing or Public Relations)
  • Experience :

  • 5 years’ experience in a communications and / or marketing role
  • 3 years’ experience in project management in a busy, fast-paced environment
  • Previous experience in post-secondary education and alumni networks is preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • In-depth knowledge of e-communication tools including website and graphic design principles
  • Knowledge of communications and marketing best practices, processes, trends, and tools in area of specialty
  • Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University Ability to analyze metrics and consider past communications to craft and distribute engaging written communications, using social media or other appropriate channels
  • Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
  • Communication and presentation skills to engage audiences, with confidence interacting with individuals at all levels of an organization Strong writer with proficiency in copy editing
  • Intermediate computer skills with relevant software, including Microsoft Office with an advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; skills in Convio an asset
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage social media platforms, communication and engagement strategies
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with colleagues, and external stakeholders
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage activities both for self and others effectively
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution and people management skills
  • Strong project management skills and ability to execute creative and cost effective marketing communication projects
  • Photography skills would be an asset
