As an Archaeologist with Stantec’s Calgary team, your role will be to participate primarily in archaeological field programs as an assistant archaeologist working under a senior, permit holding archaeologist.
Fieldwork will include conducting surveys to identify archaeological sites, mitigation studies consisting of archaeological excavation, and may also include construction monitoring.
Lab work (artifact analysis) may be available after the conclusion of the field season.
This is a contract staff position with an expected duration of 4 months and the possibility of extension.
Your Key Responsibilities
Perform archaeological fieldwork under the direction of a Senior Archaeologist in various parts of Alberta and / or western Canada
Complete archaeological excavation (hand excavation, use of wheelbarrows, etc.) involving very long walks / hikes sometimes through challenging terrain and shovel testing in remote locations
Perform archaeological survey, excavation, and monitoring
Operation of a motor vehicle, including pickup trucks and trailering
Operation of other types of motorized equipment including archaeological power screens
Operating near mobile equipment and heavy machinery
Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and the use of personal protective equipment
Analyze and interpretation of artifacts
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Ability to travel and work non-standard work weeks and long days in variable weather and physical settings
Perform physically demanding work often in remote field settings where services, including medical services, may be inaccessible
Dedication to successful project execution and technical excellence
Applies logic and technical capabilities to resolve technical issues in an effective manner
Working understanding of technical writing skills
Demonstrates a collaborative approach to work
Working understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required), and demonstrates use and understanding of these policies and procedures as appropriate to their work
Education and Experience
Must have or be currently enrolled in a BA or B.Sc. in Archaeology or Anthropology
Minimum 2 years’ work experience or an equivalent combination of education (e.g. advanced degree) and experience
Palaeontological experience is an asset
Successful completion of a field school and technical courses (e.g. lithic analysis) is preferred
Historical resources field experience in Alberta / western Canada is preferred
Possession of a valid driver’s license is strongly preferred
