What is the opportunity?
In this Senior Counsel role you will have the opportunity to provide legal advice and support to the Canadian Structured Notes and Equity Derivatives desks of the Global Equity-Linked Products business.
You will handle documentation and policy advice for the derivatives trading activities of the Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities businesses.
You will be a trusted advisor and guardian of the Bank by delivering transactional and advisory legal services to, and manage legal, regulatory and reputational risks for, the supported businesses.
What will you do?
Provide primary legal support for the Canadian Structured Notes and Canadian Equity Derivatives business
Understand the business and related products, and inspire confidence at all levels of Capital Markets employees with respect to the identification and management of legal risk
Provide sound, creative and practical legal advice to the Capital Markets business and functional groups, including Group Risk Management, Compliance and Operations
Provide joint legal support for the derivatives trading businesses globally; partner with the Bank’s trading documentation teams and derivatives credit, risk management and operations teams
Support the global trading activities of the Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities businesses
Provide jurisdictional policy advice relating to netting and collateral relief for derivatives businesses
Manage external counsel to identify appropriate resources for resolving issues and managing the quality and cost of services
Collaborate with structured notes and equity derivatives support lawyers in the United States and the United Kingdom
What do you need to succeed?
2+ years of securities law experience working in an in-house legal department or law firm.
Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor from recognized law school
Demonstrated capability to work independently and collaboratively, including exercising good practical judgment
Superior written and oral communication skills
Called to the Bar of a Canadian province
Subject matter expertise in Capital Markets legal and regulatory issues. Experience with secured lending and derivatives products will be considered an asset
Self-starter with ability to prioritize and work in a fast-paced team environment
Ability to manage competing priorities and make independent decisions
Direct experience negotiating complex agreements under tight deadlines
