Your Opportunity

In the capacity of Project Engineer / Design Manager, you will interface directly with Clients and Stakeholders while leading Stantec’s highway design and multi-discipline teams to effectively manage project deliverables, with a focus on quality and team collaboration.

You will be supporting the transportation team, in both highways and major infrastructure projects.

In this role your will have the interpersonal skills to foster a positive team environment, work collaboratively and support a culture of safety.

Your broad skills sets will be called upon to execute a variety of tasks which may include, proposal & work plan preparation, engineering design management of project scope, schedule and budgets, coordination with other disciplines and team resources, lead the technical preparation of highway and roadway designs, quality management, business planning and account management.

Your Key Responsibilities

Working with leadership and team members in both Highways / Roads as well as Major Projects, you will lead and perform complex engineering design tasks on assigned road & highway related projects, including the design and preparation of design criteria documents, engineering, right of way and utility impact drawings, cost estimates, construction specifications, engineering reports and required applications to regulatory agencies.

Experience with BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) technical guidelines and construction standards, as well as existing relationships with MoTI as our largest client, is highly desirable but not specifically required.

Manages design production from concept through detailed design, to tender ready; and provides engineering support through the construction phase of projects.

Leading and supporting Business Development will be a notable component of your work with efforts including client engagement and proposal preparation.

Coordinates and collaborates with other engineering disciplines and supporting technical staff for production of designs and drafting support.

Responsible for quality review checking of designs and sealing of projects as Engineer of Record, for projects under their own direct supervision.

Supports the permitting process of projects, which may require meeting with Clients, Contractors, reviewing agency personnel.

Coordinates with Clients and Regulatory Agencies, for reviews and approvals.


Your Capabilities and Credentials

Strong communication and problem-solving skills, and aptitude as a self-starter for leadership, managing people and delivery of highway and infrastructure projects.

Ability to effectively recognize and discuss project issues with Clients and stakeholders.

Comprehensive technical understanding of all phases of infrastructure projects, including conventional and alternative delivery methods.

Proven business development experience.

Excellent time-management skills and ability to work independently.

Thorough understanding of project scoping, task identification, assigning resources, scheduling, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.

Understanding of applicable design guidelines and codes for relevant jurisdictions.

Strong understanding of relevant design software, which may include AutoCAD, Civil3D and Auto-Turn.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent & Licensed Professional Engineer. Minimum of 10 years of progressive and accumulated experience, including project / design management, construction engineering experience, preferably design and construction of roads, highways and major infrastructure projects.

A more senior individual is generally preferred; however, our team is willing to train the right intermediate candidate who meets the preferred minimum qualifications.

An experienced technologist candidate meeting the other requirements of this posting would also be considered for the role.


The ideal candidate would be located in the lower mainland and report to our office in either Vancouver or Burnaby. However, reporting to our Kamloops or Kelowna office may also be an option if you are the strongest candidate.

Position will primarily work in an office setting and may require some travel and field work. Hybrid, partial work from home alternatives are also an option.
