Description of Duties :
The practicum student will help select and transfer a substantial portion of our library collection to off-site storage.
This task will include a comprehensive literature review and consultations with peer institutions. The practicum student, along with a supervisor, will search relevant databases, create annotated bibliographies, read and precise relevant articles and summarize findings.
A thorough assessment of the collection will be necessary and will include identifying discreet / unique areas of the collection and what makes them special.
The practicum student may aid this process by working with library data including issuing reports from our Library system, analysing and structuring reports with tools such as Python and Openrefine.
This assessment will inform the creation of metrics which will help identify items future status as either on site or off site.
These metrics will be cross referenced against statistics such as age, language, condition and circulation to help arrive at a selection of items to transfer.
The practicum student will help compare and cross reference data points. With a tentative work plan in place, consultation with faculty and students as well as other stake holders will be necessary, and may include surveys and focus groups.
The practicum student will help organize and facilitate focus groups, as well as creating and administering surveys, and synthesizing results.
The practicum student will be working closely with a team of librarians.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills :
Background in music. / Experience with implementing research techniques such as creating surveys and running focus groups.
A thorough understanding of best practices in assessing a large music collection. As well as a solid, vetted workplan to facilitate reducing our collections onsite footprint
