Complete and be responsible for carrying out synthesis of small molecule targets in the lab with limited guidance and contribute to a safe working environment.
Keep an accurate record of all work with an eye to reproducibility and recording of costs.
Duties : Work Safely
Setting up and organizing equipment and reactions so that they are run in a safe manner with guidance from the Lab Supervisor or designate
Abiding by health and safety guidelines prescribed by governing bodies and the TRC Environmental Health and Safety Committee
May need help in recognizing potential safety issues
Keeping an organized bench
Keeping up with company SOP and safety training
Be able to do process development with guidance
Contribute to the choice of the correct reaction and / or reagents to improve a reaction outcome
Carrying out : dry reactions, separations by chromatography, straightforward distillation and crystallizations
May require assistance in interpreting routine analytical data and spectra independently
Maintaining a Good Level of Productivity
May require assistance with organizing time and daily activities
Making good reaction scale choices, possibly requiring input from the supervisor
Completing reactions on a weekly basis at a pace >
70% of the company average, including work-up and purification
Advancing 2-3 projects on a weekly basis at a pace >
70% the company average
Keeping Good Records
Keeping a notebook that is can be read, understood and reproduced. May require clarification after auditing by the Lab Supervisor
Completing paperwork for completed projects is turned in in a timely manner. May require support.
Working closely with Lab Supervisor and other members of the chemistry production team to resolve technical with ProjectsWorking with Finished Goods & Logistics team and Receiving team regarding materialsWorking with Analytical team regarding product testingWorking with Maintenance & Facilities Department regarding equipment issuesWorking with Human Resources Department regarding personnel issues and HR policiesWorking with Environmental Health & Safety Department regarding environmental, health and safety issues and policies
Perform other duties
Performing other duties and complete additional projects as assigned
Working on several different projects of varying lengths and complexity
MSc in organic chemistry, chemistry or related field with 2+ years of industry or research experience (academic experience is acceptable)
High-level knowledge of organic reactions and their mechanisms
Strong ability to search the chemical literature with SciFinder and other tools
Ability to plan, develop and trouble shoot complex multi-step syntheses
Expert knowledge in carrying out a wide variety of organic laboratory techniques including, but not limited to, water and oxygen sensitive chemistry, microscale manipulations, modern organometallic synthetic methods
Experience performing process development and research
Experience in the extraction of natural products and / or photochemistry is an asset
The ability to characterize products of complex structure by independent interpretation of spectral data
Expertise in developing methods for separating complex mixtures and using fundamental techniques and advanced purification techniques such as ion-exchange chromatography, reverse-phase chromatography, and automated purification methods is preferred
