Support the Greater Vancouver Area Business by advising on matters related to Employee and Labour Relations. This includes supporting the administration of Collective Agreements, advising the business on key matters such as language interpretation, grievance management, the duty to accommodate process and other legal matters, preparing and leading the collective bargaining process, and supporting other initiatives as required.
Provide additional oversight and advising for Western Canada businesses as required.
Health, Safety & Environment
Demonstrates a commitment to a safe work environment; understands the safety and environmental objectives of the organization and supports these efforts in a visible manner.
Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.
Actively participates and supports business Environmental, Health and Safety Committees or improvement teams.
Collaborates with safety organization on safety training initiatives.
Labour Relations :
Takes ownership of preparation for, and participates in and / or leads, collective bargaining.
Provides expertise on contract interpretation
Provides advice and guidance to market Human Resources Manager for disciplinary matters
Advises market Human Resources Managers in grievance management including attending meetings, tracking progress and drafting responses.
Collaborates with the national Employee and Labour Relations Analyst in pre and post ratification process. This includes : Proactively facilitates the preparation of bargaining tools including researching settlements, preparing wage comparisons, populating costing model and populating the mandate book;
Facilitate and be accountable for completion of the post ratification process which includes the preparation of Data Change Form (DCFs) in a timely manner and following up on programming and wage changes.
This may include validating retro payment calculations as required. Manage the process for the preparation and or review of drafts for ratified collective agreements.
Employee Relations :
Supports and advises on investigations as required by market Human Resources Manager
Handle other employee relations’ issues as assigned.
Compensation / Benefits and General Human Resources (as needed by HR Team) :
Assist in the review of employee benefit plans and pension plans and preparation of recommendations.
Research and assist in preparation of annual non-union merit recommendations
Take ownership of all projects and tasks assigned.
General Administrative Responsibilities :
Oversee legal invoice payment and tracking
Manage arbitrations, grievances and Human Rights claims tracking as needed
Manage the accurate filing of contracts and grievance data management.
Perform other administrative duties as required
Primary responsibility will be Greater Vancouver Area including Richmond Cement Plant
Territory for Western Canada Employee & Labour Relations Team covers : Canada : BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, USA : Washington
Travel Requirements up to 30%
Multiple legislative jurisdictions with an Employee base of approximately : 4500+ hourly employees. 700+ salaried employees65+ Collective Agreements15+ Union locals
BCOM / BBA, preferably specializing in Human Resource Management with a focus on Labour relations or another relevant post-secondary degree
Experience and Skill Set :
5+years progressive experience in Labour Relations with responsibility for collective agreement interpretation, grievance management and progressive discipline matters
Experience in collective bargaining process through more than one (1) negotiation cycle as second chair
Experience leading the collective bargaining process.
Demonstrated ability to manage and to be flexible in an unpredictable environment in terms of time demands and type of work
Demonstrated ability to manage diverse Employee relations issues
Construction / mining sector experience an asset
Strong understanding of British Columbia Labour and Employment Laws. Knowledge of other Western provinces an asset.
Strong time management and prioritization skills
Ability to work with autonomy and limited supervision Comfortable working with numbers; strong problem solving and analytical skills
Maintains a high degree of discretion and confidentiality
Advanced skills working with Google Drive, MS Excel and Word and strong overall computer skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
General understanding of payroll; Experience with compensation & benefits an asset.
