Secwepemc Language and Culture Teacher K-12

The Skeetchestn Indian Band is a rural First Nation Community located approximately 60 kilometers West of Kamloops, British Columbia.

The Band strives to support and progress the membership and community members while preserving its cultural and traditional values.

Skeetchestn Community School fosters a collaborative culture; open, friendly, team-based, participative, and consensus driven.

The school offers Kindergarten through Grade 12 and accommodates about 50 students. The school contains a total of five classrooms;

a gymnasium; a library / resource centre; a multi-purpose classroom for the Secwepemctsin language and culture, as well as special education uses;

administration and staff rooms. We currently require a Contracted Teacher for the 2021 / 2022 school year.

Requirements :

1. First Nations Language Teaching Certificateor be willing to go through the process.

2. Knowledge and understanding of Secwepemc communities, culture, values and practices.

3. Fluent or developing fluency, speaker of Western Secwepemc (Skeetchestn) dialect.

4. Knowledge or developing knowledge of written Western Secwepemc (Skeetchestn) dialect.

Terms of Employment

The terms of employment are governed by the Skeetchestn Community School Policy and Procedures, and by the Skeetchestn Indian Band Personnel Policy.

The Skeetchestn Community School is a B.C. Independent School, and all employees must abide by all of the laws and legislation governing mandated schools in B.

C. To that end your duties, rights and responsibilities are set out in, but not limited to, the following B.C. and Canadian Legislation :

Criminal Records Review Act (Criminal Record Checks)

The Act requires all persons employed by a school to undergo criminal record checks if the employed persons' work involves work with children.

Skeetchestn Community School expects all staff to complete a Criminal record Check.

Child, Family and Community Service Act (Child Abuse)

Section 14 of the Child, Family and Community Services Act requires a person to report to a child protection social worker in the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) if the person believes that the child is in need of protection in the situations set out in section 13 of the Child, Family and Community Service Act. Responsibilities :

Plan and teach daily TPR (oral) Secwepemc Language and Culture Program, K-12

Assess, evaluate and report on student progress

Follow locally developed Secwepemc curriculum for Grades Kindergarten to Grade 12

Develop short and long term (overview) plans for school’s language and culture program

Develop and support school-based Secwepemc cultural activities, events and opportunities

Participate in and support schools Secwepemc drumming and singing program

Extend the school’s language and culture program (promote community and family involvement)

Provide a year plan and thematic cultural unit plans around the Secwepemc seasonal calendar

Work alongside the school team to integrate language and cultural content across the curriculum as well as facilitate fluent speakers into school programs

Qualifications Required :

Positive, enthusiastic, energetic and team-spirited teacher.

Knowledge and understanding of Secwepemc communities, culture, values and practices.

Fluent or developing fluency, speaker of Western Secwepemc (Skeetchestn) dialect.

Knowledge or developing knowledge of written Western Secwepemc (Skeetchestn) dialect.

Classroom teaching experience or related experience.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents and community.

The personal qualities necessary to encourage learning.

Experience working with or willingness to work with and planning for students with unique learning needs.

Successful experience enabling all students to learn successfully.

The ability to establish a positive and relaxed learning environment with high expectations for all learners.

Proven ability to establish a positive and proactive classroom management system.

The ability to set goals for self-development and to embrace change.

Regular professional development and training opportunities to improve teaching practices. Participate in First Nations School Association (FNSA) Professional Learning Community meetings, if available.

Participate in supervision of students, before and after school, during recess and lunch and on field trips.

Specific Terms :

Continuing contract to June 2022.

a. Hours and wages to be determined.

b. Additional hours (included in contract) may be required at the discretion of the School Principal.

Inclusive of meetings, supervision and planning required for exemplary teaching and support of the school’s instructional programs.

Inclusive of all School Professional Days (Pro-D’s) and Staff Meetings.

Inclusive of special events, special supervision or planning and special meetings required to support cultural and instructional programs outside of the regular work hours.

Contract Amount to be paid bi-weekly. Hourly wage based on experience and classification.

Additional Contract Benefits based on the Skeetchestn Indian Band Benefits Package per Skeetchestn Indian Band policy, including :

a. Pension Plan contributions matched to a maximum of 5.5%. (Options : 2.5%, 3.75%, 5.5%)

b. Volunteer contributions deductions to a personal pension plan hosted by the Band Group Pension Plan.
