ABOUT SECOND MILE CLUB
Second Mile Club is a not for profit agency that is a division of The Kensington Health Centre. Second Mile Club has provides community support services such as Adult Day Program, Congregate Dining, Friendly Visiting, Client Intervention Assistance, Respite Care, Home Help and Medical Escort.
Adults over the age of 55 and individuals with physical disabilities over the age of 18 who live in the area bounded by Yonge Street, Bathurst Street, Lake Ontario and St.
Clair Avenue West may be eligible to receive Second Mile Club services.
Second Mile Club’s mission is to provide resources and services to enhance the social, intellectual, emotional and physical well-
being of a multicultural community of older adults and adults living with physical disabilities in Toronto.
TITLE : Medical and / or Translation Escort
PURPOSE : To provide social support for clients living in the community.
Volunteers calls client the day before the appointment, to confirm the time and pick up / meeting place.
Accompany client to and from medical appointments, using either TTC or taxi depending on senior’s mobility
It is the client’s responsibility to plan and organize transportation including wheel trans iftaxi is needed it is the client’s responsibility to arrange and fund
Ensure the safety of senior and assist with the use of any walking aids
Translates information to senior if needed
Report any necessary information from appointment back to CVS, which will be transferred to Case Manager
Sociable and friendly, patience and understanding, comfortable with seniors and adults with disabilities
Additional language skills (specifically Chinese Dialects) isan asset but not a requirement
Sociable and friendly, comfortable with seniors
Complete all mandatory documentation
Complete all mandatory Volunteer Orientation Sessions
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
SCREENING, ORIENTATION, & TRAINING REQUIRMENTS
1.Have a brief interview to determine eligibility for this volunteer position.
2.Complete a Vulnerable Sector Screening Police Reference Check.
3. Two (2) professional references
5. Attend a volunteer orientation, complete online training, complete addition training as required, sign off on our confidentiality agreement and orientation checklist, etc.
LOCATION : Clients home and / or medical facility in the Downtown Toronto area.
TIME & DAY :
Weekdays during regular office hours
One year,availability of the Volunteer (within reason), reference letter only provided after 6 months of consecutive service
Regular in-service sessions
Annual Volunteer Appreciation event
Volunteers will be reimbursed for TTC tokens
