Position Summary
Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist is accountable for the implementation and monitoring of processes and practices to achieve a safe and healthy work environment.
This includes providing occupational health and safety advice to the plant staff to facilitate compliance with Plant and Sofina H&S requirements, occupational health and safety legislation, guidelines, and standards to support plant’s health and safety program and initiatives.
Key Accountabilities
Partner with Plant Management to provide guidance and technical support regarding specific issues relative to health & safety programs, initiatives and policies.
Accountable for the facilitation, monitoring and review of the Plant Health & Safety Program to eliminate the risks causing workplace incidents and injuries.
Accountable for the facilitation and monitoring of a safe work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors. Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices, in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
Support the claims / case management requirements of facilities, as required and at the direction of H&S Manager responsible for claims management.
Monitor and analyze safety trends and incident data to ensure the designed programs provide a safe workplace for all employees.
Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
Coordinate and facilitate any WCB / WSIB proactive / program initiatives, as directed.
Develop and lead internal training requirements, safety talks and lunch & learn sessions as needed.
Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures.
Provide new-employee health and safety orientations and develop materials for these presentations.
Provide ongoing support / guidance / participation to the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
Requirements
Degree, Diploma or Certification from a recognized Occupational Health & Safety program, in the process of obtaining certification or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
3 - 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
Knowledge of applicable Provincial safety legislation and regulation, Occupational Health and Safety standards is required.
Knowledge of Claims Management and applicable Workers’ Compensation Board policies and procedures an asset
CRSP Certification an asset
Must be willing to work flexible shifts as facility operates 24 hours / 5 days a week.
Some occasional travel may be required to conferences, other facilities, or for training purposes.
Schedule : Mon to Fri, 11am -7.30pm
