Description & Details

  • Hospice Visiting Volunteers provide support to individuals living with a life threatening illness and their families by providing companionship;
  • practical assistance; emotional, spiritual and social support; and caregiver relief. Volunteers provide support in the individuals home or other place of residence for up to 4 hours per week.

    Visits are scheduled based on the individuals needs and the Volunteers availability.

  • Please note that not all individuals requiring hospice support will reside in a location that is fully accessible. Volunteers who require an accessible location will be suitably matched.
  • Training :

    Volunteers are provided, free of charge, with the 35 hour Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO) Training in order to ensure they have the skills and knowledge required to support individuals served.

    Topics covered by the training include, but are not limited to : communication skills, family dynamics, cultural competency, healthy caregiver boundaries, practical care giving skills, grief and bereavement, and the Hospice Visiting Volunteer role.

    Volunteers must complete the HPCO training program before being matched with an individual seeking Hospice support. The next training program will start February8, 2016 until March 10, 2016.

    The training has been scheduled for everyone Monday and Thursday evening from 6 : 00-9 : 00pm of that 4 week period, with an additional Sunday session, scheduled for Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 10 : 00am to 3 : 00pm.

    Skills And Experience Required :

    We are seeking volunteers that are : *responsible and dependable *respectful *friendly, warm, and empathetic *sensitive to, and able to support the needs of others *willing to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds *able to remain calm and supportive in difficult situations Volunteer applicants do not require prior training or experience in healthcare or hospice.

    Volunteers need a basic understanding of English in order to benefit from the training provided. We are currently actively seeking Mandarin speaking Volunteers due to an increase in requests from that community.

    Volunteers who are fluent in other languages are also welcomed and may be matched with an individual who has a specific language request.

  • Volunteers will be provided with HPCO Training and other ongoing training opportunities. Training's offered will assist those interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare or human services fields to develop education and / or employment resumes.
  • Volunteers are invited to a monthly 'Caring and Sharing Group' and will have the opportunity to meet new people and learn from the experiences of other volunteers and staff.
  • Volunteers are invited to annual recognition and special events throughout the year.
