The Odyssey Language Assistant Program (established in 1973,to promote Canada’s two official languages and the cultures theyconvey) is a paid, professional work experience that involvestravelling to Quebec or New Brunswick to work with students fornine months.

Earn over $27 an hour while gaining valuable workexperience in a classroom setting

  • Working under teacher supervision, you will plan and leadactivities on a daily basis to motivate students to learn moreabout the target language.
  • You will share yourculture and the unique linguistic features of your home regionthrough art, music, stories, local expressions, andhumour.
  • Your work will consist mostlyof :

  • preparing and executingactivities that focus on language (aural comprehension and oralexpression);
  • developing activities thatreflect everyday communication opportunities in order to helpstudents improve their English-language skills in real-lifesituations;
  • drawing from your own interestsand those of the students, this is an opportunity to use yourtalents and passions to help someone build skills in English, andto have fun doing it;
  • examples includestarting a debate, playing a trivia game, putting on a play, andteaching a dance or a new sport; and
  • Thelanguage assistant does not replace the teacher. The tasks of alanguage assistant may include the following :

  • encouraging students to participate in oral communicationactivities;
  • preparing classroom activitiesthat focus on learning about language and culture;
  • leading small groups of two to 10 students;
  • motivating students to learn English;
  • encouraging students to appreciate and explore yourculture and their own in a respectful and creative way throughlanguage;
  • participating in evening and weekendcultural activities;
  • meeting with school staffupon request.

    In order to qualify for the Odyssey program,you must :

  • have solidEnglish-language skills, both oral and written. They are amust-have skill set. English proficiency must be as strong as if itwere your first language;
  • be a Canadiancitizen or permanent resident of Canada (those studying in Canadaon a student visa are not eligible);
  • havecompleted, by the start of your work term and within the last 10years, at least one full year of postsecondary studies, college, oruniversity.
  • If you are completing studies in Quebec, you must havecompleted two years of college-level studies or one year ofuniversity within the last 10 years.

    For studies done outside ofCanada, you will also need to submit a formal assessment of youracademic credentials.

    There is noage limit for participation in Odyssey, but you do need to meet alleligibility requirements. There are no French-language-skillrequirements to apply for the Odyssey program, but some basic oraland spoken skills in your second official language are always agreat asset.

    A driver’s licence is not a requirement for selection.However, in some regions, having a licence ispreferable.
