VP Shipyard Integration

Irving Shipbuilding, located at 3099 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 5M7, is part of the J.D. Irving Group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels.

The company's primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with three other locations in the Maritime Provinces. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Coast Guard.

This is a permanent, full-time role (one opening) based in Halifax, N.S.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Acting as the senior Subject Matter Expert in conjunction with the Program team - Leads the Project Planning & Master Scheduling activities for a major warship design and build program, including integrating major defense subcontractors.
  • Manage the Design for Build’ team to develop a Build Strategy and construction sequence for a new design Warship. Provide assurance that the ship can be manufactured and constructed in Halifax Shipyard.
  • As the senior subject matter expert, works to ensure all Production Planning processes and systems are in place to execute the build plan to schedule.
  • Act as the business customer for the Integrated Data Environment being introduced into the Shipyard, providing assurance that the new systems are fit for purpose to manage the Bill of Materials from definition through to detailed planning.
  • Project Planning & Master Scheduling

  • Lead the activities to develop and maintain an Integrated Master Schedule for the delivery of the design and build of the Canadian Surface Combatant CSC .
  • Ensure the Combat System, new facilities and system requirements are integrated into the schedule and support the program.
  • Work with major defense sub contractors Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems to maintain and mature the Integrated Master Schedule.
  • Produce reports for the Government of Canada on schedule health and certainty.
  • Production Planning

  • Develop production planning processes to enable efficient job pack production for the build of CSC.
  • Ensure sufficient planning resources with the required experience and training are available to plan the ship.
  • Provide assurance by testing that the new systems and NC data can be utilized in the shipyard to nest plate for cutting, bend pipe for fabrication and manage cable production.
  • Provide assurance that the resource demands from the plan are underpinned by realistic norms’ and are achievable in the shipyard.
  • Ensure the resource loading and work content for each stage of construction is achievable and that the yard capacity is not exceeded.
  • Design for Build and Build Strategy Development

  • Working closely with the Ship Design Agent, develop a build strategy and sequence to efficiently construct CSC in the Halifax Shipyard.
  • Propose facility and tooling changes within the shipyard to enable an efficient build process and improved schedule.
  • Prior to start of build, de-risk the new toolsets with the production of a test module to ensure the new systems and NC data transfers are operating effectively.
  • Work closely with Production Planning and Master Scheduling to ensure the build strategy and plan remain aligned.
  • Business Owner for the Integrated Data Environment

  • Take business ownership of the introduction of new business management systems into the shipyard, with particular emphasis on the PLM Product Lifecycle Management System
  • Work with System Suppliers to assure delivery of IT capability to cost and schedule.
  • Ensure the timely introduction of the systems to support training and construction.
  • Implementation and maintenance of data quality checks of all data in the shipyard ERP system & associated shipyard management systems
  • Planning and management of ERP system upgrades including all interfaces to new and existing legacy systems
  • Qualifications :

  • Minimum 15 years leadership experience
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a shipbuilding environment
  • Extensive experience in the design and transition to build of a First in Class ship, particularly a warship, is considered essential.
  • Demonstrated excellence in project management in a complex manufacturing environment
  • Significant depth and experience in utilizing relevant I.T. systems associated with planning and project management in a ship building environment (i.
  • e. Project Management tools like Primavera, ERP systems, Product Lifecycle Management systems, Earned Value Management systems, 3D CAD tools, CAD / CAM data transfer).

  • Experience in the introduction of a Product Lifecycle Management tools into a shipyard environment considered an advantage.
  • Expert knowledge in Earned Value Management with government contracts; shipbuilding programs preferred
  • Strong understanding of planning fundamentals for shipbuilding programs including build strategy development, facility and shop floor planning, detailed production planning, bill of material development and job package production for the shop floor
  • Relevant Post- Secondary Education
  • MBA and / or PMP considered assets.
